Caramel Toffee Flavored Oolong Tea from Octavia Tea

Caramel-ToffeeTea Information:

Leaf Type:  Oolong

Where to Buy:  Octavia Tea

Tea Description:

This is sweet and creamy with decadent caramel. It’s certainly rich with flavour, but balanced out enough by the profile of the dark oolong that you can enjoy every last sip without getting overwhelmed. The oolong lends an amazing roasted character that blends perfectly with the hazelnut.

Taster’s Review:

Oh … yum!  This Caramel Toffee Flavored Oolong Tea from Octavia Tea is so good, and as I’m sipping on this tea and writing this review, this song came on my Pandora Radio – a perfect tune for this tea experience!

I had high expectations going in to this tea experience.  With a tea called “Caramel Toffee Oolong,” well, it better be good, right?  And it is.

The caramel/toffee notes are very well-defined and they meld so beautifully with the dark Oolong.  The Oolong has a slightly smoky character that complements the toffee.  It’s a sweet, smooth and silky Oolong.  I typically find that darker Oolong teas have more of a fruity character than a floral one, and that is true of this tea base.

The caramel and toffee bring a sweet flavor and a hint of bitter burnt sugar taste to the cup.  The natural nutty tones of the Oolong are enhanced with the notes of hazelnut flavoring, creating a very delicious, dessert-y sort of flavor that would make a great next-to-no calorie substitution for something fattening.  It tastes like it should be naughty but it isn’t.

A truly decadent and delicious tea treat – I’m glad that this one was in my Amoda Tea Tasting Box for this month!

On the Seventh Day of Christmas, Della Terra Teas Sent to Me…

We’re past the halfway point in this countdown, and you know what that means, don’t you?  The big day is just around the corner, almost here … are you finished with your holiday shopping?  We’re not, but we are nearly done, and that’s more than I can say for our usual progress this time of year.

Today’s tea was sent in a beautiful blue, sparkly envelope/box.   These little boxes are really cute, and of course, I’m keeping them … hopefully I’ll think of something to do with them that is alter-ish art-y.

Anyway, I’m sure you’re all just sitting there at the edges of your seats, waiting to learn what today’s tea from Della Terra Teas is …

Taster’s Review:

This IS a tantalizing treat!

walnutbrittleThe dry leaf offers a very appetizing sight with the big chunks of walnut, coconut and pineapple blended with the long spears of Chinese Sencha green tea.  The aroma is nutty and fruity, and interestingly enough, reminds me very much of the holidays, although I don’t usually associate walnuts, coconut or pineapple with this time of year.  Somehow, the way it all comes together reminds me very much of Christmastime – perhaps it is the sweetness of the scent … I don’t know.  But it is certainly bringing a smile to my face.

The flavor also brings a smile to my face.  The flavor of the green tea is prominent, it is sweet and slightly vegetative, although most of the sweetness I taste is coming from the coconut, I think, or it could be the fact that there is also brittle candy in this blend, and that may have melted during the brewing process.  I do taste a bit of caramelized sugar in the cup, and that just may be my favorite part of this tea.

But I also like the walnut flavor.  Walnut is not a “usual” nut flavor to find in a tea … almonds – yes … but not walnuts.  But I think it is the fact that I don’t often get to experience walnut flavor in a tea that makes me enjoy this rare occasion so much.

Overall, a very enjoyable cuppa.  It is nutty and sweet, with just the right amount of fruity essence to keep the cup interesting.  A bit unexpected and very nice, indeed!

PRODUCT REVIEW:Chai Tea & Cashew Artisan Brittle from Morning Glory Confections

Where to Buy:  Morning Glory Confections

Product Description:

Morning Glory’s Chai Tea & Cashew Brittle takes the warm, complex flavors of chai tea and combines them with buttery cashews for an experience that evokes the coziness of winter nights.

Taster’s Review:

About a month ago, I noticed this brittle was featured on the homepage of Foodzie.  You know I had to try it!

And I am so glad I did.  It is absolutely delicious!  This brittle has an amazing set of flavors:  salty, sweet, spicy.  The contrast between these flavors is so delicate.  The spicy tones from the chai tea don’t smack you upside the head, but instead, they sneak up underneath the sweetness of the brittle and the mellow nutty flavor of the cashews, developing slowly.  The spicy flavors are so intriguing in their development that it keeps me munching on the confection and wishing I had more when it disappeared.

This is one of the best brittle candies I’ve ever tasted.  It has an amazing complexity!  As you may know, I previously reviewed the New Mexico Chili & Pumpkin Seed Brittle from the same company on my Hungry in Portland blog, and honestly, I can’t tell you which one of these I like best!  They are both so delicious – certainly NOT your run-of-the-mill brittle confections that you might find in the candy aisle of the grocery store.

If you’ve a sweet tooth and love contrasting flavors like sweet and salty or sweet and spicy – you MUST try this brittle!  You will love it.
