Taster’s Review:

The name of this Wonderland Custom Tea Blend from Adagio Teas designed by Carolynne Keenan is what interested me about this blend.  I’m a fan of Alice in Wonderland, so I was intrigued by this blend.  I don’t know if I would have selected the Cinnamon, Candy Cane and Spearmint teas to create a blend called Wonderland, I guess because in my mind, they seem to go together so well, and I would think that Wonderland would be a bit more wacky.

That said, this blend is very tasty.  A really good balance of flavors has been achieved.  It’s got a zesty flavor from the cinnamon, but not too much.  There’s a fresh, minty flavor from the peppermint and spearmint, and a sweetness from the candy cane notes and it all melds in a way that is very pleasing to the palate.  It’s got a crisp, lively flavor to it.

And while I do taste the black tea, it’s more of a background note and not a real dominating force in this cup.  And given some of my past experiences with Adagio’s black tea base, I’d say that not experiencing that harshness from the black tea is all for the better.  It’s a good thing!

I drank about half a cup of this without any additions, and then I tried a full cup with about a half a teaspoon of sugar.  I found that the sugar really brought out the candy cane-ishness of this tea, and I enjoyed that.  It’s good without sugar, but better with just a little bit of sugar to bring the candy cane flavors to life.

Taster’s Review:

Tasty!  I must say that when it comes to Adagio Teas, I definitely have better luck with the white teas versus the black teas.  This La Isla Bonita Custom Tea Blend (created by very own Jennifer Bliss aka TeaEqualsBliss!) from Adagio Teas – a white tea blend – is very nice, indeed.

The tropical notes are the strongest flavors in this cup.  I taste the coconut and pineapple out in front, and then just beneath those tropical fruits, I taste notes of orange and tangerine.  The coconut tastes smooth and creamy, the pineapple is sweet with just a hint of tart, and the orange and tangerine add a pop of bright flavor to the cup.

The white tea tastes soft and delicate and slightly earthy.  It is the right base for this tea.  Everything is “delicate” but together becomes a powerful flavor without becoming overwhelming.

And then there is the spearmint!  I like that there isn’t too much spearmint in this blend.  There is just the right touch of mint to give it that cool taste of mint without throwing off the sweet tropical and citrus-y notes.

What I’m enjoying most here is how the airy quality of the white tea comes together with the spearmint and together, the two become a very “breezy” sort of sensation, which is in keeping with the “La Isla Bonita” inspiration behind the blend.   I love that I can taste the inspiration!

This is tasty served hot, but it really shines when it’s iced.  So deliciously fruity with just a touch of mint:  refreshing!

One Tart Queen of Hearts Custom Blend from Adagio Teas

Tea Description:

From the Wonderland series, this is One Tart Queen of Hearts! The flavor isn’t as tart as the name would lead you to believe. If you don’t like too tart teas, try with sweetener (sugar or Splenda).

Taster’s Review:

This is really tasty.  Despite the name of the tea – One Tart Queen of Hearts – a custom blend from Adagio Teas as created by Carolynne Keenan, it isn’t as tart as I thought it would be.  It is tart, but it’s not pucker-y or sour.

I’m learning that I prefer the green teas from Adagio versus the black teas, which tend to be just a bit on the harsh side.  With this green tea blend, though, I’m not experiencing any of the usual brash taste that I get from many of Adagio’s black teas.  This green tea base is light and slightly buttery and adds a hint of sweet, vegetal flavor to this fruity blend.

The fruit flavors come together in a very harmonious way.  I taste mostly raspberry and cherry, with only hints of pomegranate, but, I like the way these three fruit notes unite.  It’s a little more tart than sweet, however, I kind of expected that from the name of the blend, you know?

But it’s not TOO tart.  I tend to have kind of a sensitive palate when it comes to tarty, sour flavors, and I don’t really care for teas (or anything, really) that are too tart.  I’m talking that it’s so sour that I pucker when I take a sip.  Not into that.  I know that there are lots of people out there who dig on that, but I’m not one of them.  So, I’m happy that while this blend created by Carolynne Keenan is tart, it’s not overwhelmingly so.

A really tasty blend.  I’d definitely drink it again!

Taster’s Review:

I was a little skeptical about this blend when I read the description.  I’m not all that crazy about Adagio’s black teas, and while I don’t recall having tried any of their decaffeinated black tea bases, because my opinion is generally less favorable of decaffeinated teas versus the caffeinated, seeing that there was an Adagio decaffeinated black tea in this blend gave me a reason to be skeptical.

But, I’m actually enjoying this Autumn’s Walk Custom Blend from Adagio Teas – a custom creation by Adagio Teas’ customer Carolynne Keenan.  It’s really quite tasty.

This blend is a combination of Adagio’s vanilla decaffeinated black tea, hazelnut honeybush and chocolate honeybush, and it’s a really clever blend, indeed!  The black tea isn’t a strong flavor here at all, and given my past experiences with Adagio’s black tea they use for their flavored teas, the lack of black tea flavor here is an absolute PLUS.  I do taste the vanilla though, and I like the way it melds with the chocolate and hazelnut, as well as the sweet, honey-like tones of the honeybush.

It is sweet, creamy, nutty and flavorful.  I don’t taste a “funky decaffeinated tea” taste in this at all, in fact, if I hadn’t been aware that there is a decaffeinated black tea in this blend, I wouldn’t have known it by taste.  A really pleasant cuppa!

Taster’s Review:

The September monthly mystery tea sampler’s club from Yunomi offered subscribers a very unique opportunity in this month’s package.  Instead of a package of pre-blended Genmaicha, I can customize my own Genmaicha experience using Genmai (Toasted Rice) from Kyoto Obubu Tea Plantation!  Awesome!

In addition to the packet of Genmai I received in my September package, I also received a packet of Houjicha and Bancha, so I decided to start with these two teas to customize my own Genmaicha.  Then I decided to try something a little bit different … and try some Genmai with a black tea.  But before I did that, I brewed a small amount of Genmai to try on its own … just to see what this brewed toasted rice tastes like!

Genmai from Kyoto Obubu Tea Plantation

The aroma of the toasted rice is really delightful.  It smells a little bit like freshly roasted nuts, but with a grainy sort of fragrance to it too.  It smells delicious.  And the flavor is remarkable!  If you drink a Genmaicha because you love that roasty-toasty flavor … you really should try the Genmai on it’s own!  Sweet, deliciously roasty and toasty with a lovely rice note.  This sort of reminds me of horchata but without the cinnamon and the creamy consistency.  And I LOVE horchata!

 Custom Genmaicha made with Bancha

To make my custom Genmaicha with Bancha, I used the organic Autumn Bancha from NaturaliTea which was also in September’s mystery tea sampler’s club package.  I used 1 part Genmai to 1 part Bancha which I measured using a teaspoon.  Mmm!  I like this a lot.  There is more Genmai to this than in a typical pre-blended Genmaicha, so I get to really experience the sweet, toasted rice flavor.  I taste the light, vegetal taste of the Bancha and I love the way the natural nutty tones of the two components accentuate each other.  This is one of the very best Genmaicha teas I’ve ever tasted.

Custom Genmaicha made with Houjicha

Oh wow!  Totally yum!  To make my custom Genmaicha with Houjicha, again, I turned again to the teas that were included in September’s mystery tea sampler’s tea club package, and used 1 part Genmai to 1 part Autumn Houjicha from the Takea Family.   This is my favorite way to enjoy the Genmai.  This is total roasty-toasty goodness … so autumnal, so perfect for this chilly evening.  So comforting and cozy to sip.  I love how TOASTY this tastes!  Absolute awesomeness!

Custom Genmaicha made with Hawaiian Black Tea

I also wanted to try the Genmai with some black tea … but what black tea to use?  I wanted to use a pure leaf, and my first thought was a Lapsang Souchong as I was imagining how the toasty notes of the Genmai would taste with the smoky Lapsang Souchong.  But, I don’t have any Lapsang Souchong at the moment, as it’s not something that I keep on hand generally … I generally just go for sample sizes of the smoky teas like Lapsang, because I’m not a huge fan of it.  But what I did have is a Hawaiian grown black tea (I won’t tell you where I got this tea since I didn’t get it from Yunomi).  The black tea isn’t a smoky tea; it is a sweet, caramel-y tea with rye bread-ish type notes.

I’m liking how the roasty-toasty flavor from the Genmai meld with the sweet, burnt-sugar caramel.  These two flavors seem made for each other!  I really like the black tea Genmaicha … if for no other reason than it’s different … but really, there’s a lot of reasons to love this tea.  Sweet, smooth, rich … toasty, delicious flavor.  YUM!  (Oh … and just for point of reference, I used the same 1:1 ratio.)

In Summary…

I really enjoyed all the different ways that Genmai allowed me to experiment.  My favorite, as I said, is the Genmai with the Houjicha, but, I really enjoyed it with the other teas too … as well as on its own!  Tasting it on its own like this evokes thoughts of using the Genmai for something like a simple broth with some green onions and wontons.  I really, really like this product a whole lot!
