Brown Sugar Organic Oolong Tea from Tea Leaf Co.

BROWN_SUGAR_OolongTea Information:

Leaf Type:  Oolong

Where to Buy:  Tea Leaf Co.

Tea Description:

A wonderfully bold and smooth organic tea blend of dark oolong and maple, a perfect pairing. While the oolong is bold, full-bodied, and lightly smoked, the maple is light, aromatic, and sweet. The combination of the two flavors results in a well-balanced, featured favorite maple tea blend.

Taster’s Review:

Mmm!  This Brown Sugar Organic Oolong Tea from Tea Leaf Co. is the first from this new-to-me tea company that I’ve tried, and it’s a good one!

The maple flavor is strong but I like that it’s not overpowering the Oolong tea.  Tea Leaf Co. has managed to strike a really delightful balance between the sweetness and rich flavor of the maple and the Oolong tea with its fruit notes and hints of smoke.

The base tea possesses notes of stone fruit (peach) and I taste wisps of smoke.  I like this delicate smoky note and how it plays to the notes of the sweet maple.  Nutty flavors develop as I continue to sip and I like how these interact with the maple notes as well.  This is a full-flavored Oolong, it’s rugged and has notes of wood and earth.  It’s a strong flavor that doesn’t wimp out behind the sweetness of the maple.  The contrasts in flavor from the woodsy, earthy, nutty and smoky flavors help keep the maple in check and keep it from becoming too cloying a drink.

The maple notes are sweet and pleasant.  They don’t taste chemical or artificial.  It tastes like someone drizzled a drop or two of real maple syrup in my teacup!  Quite delectable!

A real treat – this “Brown Sugar.”

Taster’s Review:

This had a fancier box than other Stash teas I’ve seen so I’m wondering if, based on the flavour, this was a seasonal/Christmas blend? Upon opening up the box, the wrapper itself has a different design too. There’s definitely something different about this blend!

There’s really no smell to the dry teabag; if I concentrate maybe a little apple. It’s very weak though; I hoped the tea itself has more flavour. Steeped up, I could smell the cider part of the tea quite strongly, but no maple. I really hope I pick the maple up in the taste; it’s what intrigued me about this tea in the first place! It made this something a little bit different. And as a Canadian, I can never really resist anything maple anyway.

Sipping on it now though; and there definitely is more flavour than what the dry leaf led me to believe. It really does taste like apple cider; good apple cider too! Just the right balance of sweet, tart, and spice. And speaking of that spice, there’s obviously cinnamon but the nutmeg in here is a really nice touch too. Nutmeg has really grown on me, I never used to be a fan but now when a tea includes it I get so excited! That’s the first wave of flavour but then it eases a little into the maple; it’s a little raw and unrefined tasting with a sappy quality. I like it! It makes the cup sweet and layered, and I like that this one doesn’t feel completely put together, with the ’T’s crossed and ’I’s dotted. Sometimes a little reliable inconsistency makes a tea good. If that makes any sense at all.

There are also a few other interesting notes here; I’m picking woody-cedar like notes too! Maybe it’s a trick of the mind because of the raw, sappy maple or maybe part of it is from the rooibos – but it’s very enjoyable regardless. Actually, now that I think of it the more I’m sure it’s from the rooibos. I love how natural and earthy this tea tastes though; for once the wood like quality is contributing something that enhances the tea flavourings!

There’s surprisingly a lot going on with this tea bag. Colour me quite impressed!

Taster’s Review:

I had high hopes for this Avonlea Honeybush Tisane from Lemon Lily.  I mean, cinnamon, ginger and maple together with the honeyed, nutty flavor of honeybush actually sounds pretty tasty.  Even with hibiscus in there.  But as I taste it, I’m finding myself disappointed by this.

I don’t like the combination of honeybush and hibiscus.  This just isn’t working for me.  You might think that the sweetness of the honeybush would help even out the tartness of the hibiscus, but the honeybush sweetness isn’t enough to soften the tartness of the hibiscus and the result is just a weird, funky taste.

And it’s a weird taste that even the warm spice of the cinnamon and ginger can’t offset.  Even the maple – which is a favorite flavor of mine – even the maple does very little to improve the flavor here.  In fact, I’m tasting relatively little maple flavor here.  Very disappointing.

As it cools, this does taste better.  The honeybush and hibiscus don’t seem to be battling it out to create that weird taste anymore, but the hibiscus is still too tart for my liking.  It’s drinkable now and I don’t think I would have described it as such while it was hot.

Served hot, it’s a very weird cup of tea.  As it cools, it becomes drinkable but it’s still quite tart and I find myself wishing the hibiscus wasn’t there.

I have enjoyed many of the teas that I’ve tried from Lemon Lily (thanks to not just one but two boxes from Postal Teas that has featured them), but this one just isn’t bringing a smile to my face.

Taster’s Review:

YUM!  This is seriously good.

My mouth watered when I saw the label on the package.  I want those cupcakes.

And while this tea doesn’t have “cupcake-y” flavors to it, it definitely has the maple and the marshmallow!  These flavors are strong and very well-defined.  And even though they are really strong, I still taste plenty of black tea flavor too.

It’s sweet and refreshing.  It’s something that tastes so good that you’d swear you’re cheating on your diet when you drink it, but you aren’t!  It’s iced tea!  It only TASTES indulgent.

This is one of the best flavors I’ve tasted from SBT thus far.  This might even be better than my lime favorites (Lime Cola and Lime Jello).

If you’re one who doesn’t like sweet flavors – this tea probably won’t be to your liking.  But for the rest of us, seriously, you’ve got to try this.  It’s so good.

Taster’s Review:

I’m not generally all that excited about the honeybush blends from 52Teas.  I mean, I usually like them alright and some of them I enjoy quite a bit.  But when I read the announced flavor of the week and it happens to be a honeybush flavor, I can’t say that I’m all giddy about it.  But this one … this one I was excited about.  I love maple.  I love vanilla.  And the idea of maple and vanilla together with the naturally nut and honey notes of honeybush?  Yeah, that sounds pretty darned tasty!

And it is.  This is the perfect late-night snack when you want something yummy to satisfy that sweet tooth craving.  Sweet, creamy vanilla.  Nutty flavors from the honeybush.  The maple … mmm!  And there is a light honey-like note in the background that sort of melds with all these flavors.  This is deliciously, decadently sweet!

To brew this, I put 3 bamboo scoops of the tisane in the basket of my Breville One-Touch tea maker, and then added 500ml of freshly filtered water to the kettle.  The reason I added 1 extra scoop of tisane is that I generally do add a little extra leaf to honeybush and rooibos blends.  They tend to have a slightly thinner body and I feel that the little extra leaf really helps enhance the flavor.  I set the parameters for 10 minutes steep time at 195°F.

And like I said – yumminess!  This would make the ideal dessert substitute for someone who is looking to cut the calories and fat without losing out on the flavor of a delicious dessert.  This really does taste like an indulgent dessert.  Like vanilla bean ice cream that’s been topped with real maple syrup and a sprinkling of chopped nuts.

Because it has that decadent flavor, I think that this is best hot.  Sure, it still tastes good as it cools, but there’s something remarkably cozy about it when it’s served hot.  It’s like comfort food.  It’s like that big chunk of cake that you eat to coddle the broken heart after a break up, but it won’t keep you from fitting in that little black dress next weekend!
