Milky Oolong from Harney & Sons. . . .

When I drank this for the first time last week, my first thought was “TEA BAE!” Which is so millennial of me, I know. I promise I’m not even cool enough to quite know how to use “bae” (“before anyone else”) in everyday use. But it applies to this tea.

This is a silky, rich, creamy oolong. It comes in super-cute little balls that totally snap to attention in hot water. Sometimes the balls don’t unfurl, but these are actively watch-able. The flavor is a great halfway point between green and black. The “milky” taste is really creamy, like the whipped topping on a good lemon meringue* pie.

*I was pretty sure it wasn’t spelled “mirang,” so I had to request Google’s gentle corrective guidance.

This tastes like it was flavored. That’s how sweet it is. I don’t want to be too effusive, because I try to emit a cool air of sophisticated irony (hah!) — but I really like this.

The reviewers on the Harney site like it, too. So much. Peep this review from Helen W: “Absolutely love it! Absolutely love it!” That’s the entire view. Helen. Gurl. I hear you. When I re-order this (AND I WILL), I’m going to acquire a vat. I’m going to swim in this vat like Scrooge McDuck. It will not be sanitary. People will slowly stop visiting my house. I will acquire leper status. Eventually someone will come by my house to film “Hoarding: Buried Alive: Tea Special” and I will acquire a brief Internet fame. Perhaps I will become a meme. But then I will be forgotten to the sands of time. The pan will no longer have a flash. I shall disappear into the back of your mind, just me, and my tea.

Description

For some time we’ve had requests for a milky oolong and finally we have found one that we liked so that we could share it with you.  Milky oolongs are very popular in Eastern Asia for their sweet, creamy flavors.  This one is smooth and the aroma of warmed cream is delicious!

Milky Oolong from Tea Taxi. . .

When I first started drinking tea, I avoided oolongs at all costs. They were too floral or too green and just not for me. However, over the years, I have found myself more and more curious when it comes to oolongs, particularly milk oolongs which are often so simple and yet amazingly creamy.

This particular milk oolong, Milky Oolong by TeaTaxi, boasts “a subtle taste and a delicate aroma”. I steeped it per the package directions, letting the leaves steep for 3 minutes in 190F water.

At first taste, I found myself worried that perhaps this is too subtle. It came off a touch weak and not all that milky. In fairness, the “milk” oolong I had most recently prior to trying this was Oolong Creme by Sloane Fine Teas and that set the bar quite high. The more I drink, the more flavors I find. There is a definite smoothness here but I don’t know if I would go as far as to say it is “creamy”. On the other hand, I suppose “milky” is an accurate description as it is a little on the thinner side in comparison to the other milk oolongs I’ve tried. There is also a lot of floral notes here which to me appear as almost a shadow of the orchid taste in DAVIDsTEA’s Vanilla Orchid.

All in all, this tea is not bad, but also does nothing to stand out among the sea of milk oolongs. It came to me as a sample in the Generation Tea monthly subscription and the one cup is leaving me satisfied though I probably won’t seek it out again.

Milky Alishan High Mountain Oolong fromm Ollo Tea

Milky Alishan High Mountain Oolong from Oollo Tea is one of those teas you didn’t know you MISSED until you had another cuppa after a long pause in between. A classic case of ‘you don’t know what you have until it’s gone’ I guess.

Once upon a sniff I knew right away this was a Milky Alishan. It’s been TOO LONG since my last solid milky aroma like this! The tea liquor is pretty pale creamy yellow but the flavor is the true shining star here! There is a real freshness to this sip one that is minty without actually having MINT in it. It’s crisp and clean. There is a sweet yet creamy linger to it that goes on for miles!

Milky Alishan High Mountain Oolong from Oollo Tea has those amazing thirst-quenching capabilities and as it cools a bit at room temperature the floral notes come out to play more.

The layers of flavor continue to amaze me. I take an enchanting journey into its complexity.

I’ve enjoyed a slew of Milky Alishans but there is something about this one, specifically, that stands out. I’m not sure what it is but I LOVE it. Milky Alishan High Mountain Oolong from Oollo Tea is a true gem!
