Ebony Wine from White August Tea Company

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  White August Tea Company

Product Description:

Assam black tea garnished with black currant leaves and sweet berries. We recommend enhancing this tea with a lemon zest or cream for an outstanding smooth and lightly fruity morning beverage.

Taster’s Review:

What a delightful tea with which to start my day!

The black tea base is an Assam, so it is rich and bold!  Very flavorful with a nice malty quality to it that compliments the wine-ish notes of the berries quite well.  The black currant notes does give this a wine-like taste that is further emphasized with the slightly dry astringency at the end of the sip.

The aroma and flavor is very berry-like, and it has a pleasantly sweet-tart taste.  It reminds me of late summer when the berries are ripe and bursting with flavor!  On this rainy spring morning, that is certainly a welcome thought, and with the deep, rich flavor and strength of the Assam, this tea gives me the energy I need to get up and start the day.

This would definitely make for a deliciously different breakfast tea for those days when you want something a little special!  And don’t you deserve something a little special every day?

Our hidden love, a long-lasting sweet bouquet and arousing passion fruit aroma makes this a must have for any tea collection.

Taster’s Review:

Mmm!  Passion fruit has such an inviting aroma, and this tea makes the most of it.  There are also faint notes of flower and the freshness of the green tea in the scent.  It smells so nice!

It tastes nice too!   The green tea base is light-to-medium bodied, with a fresh, vibrant taste.  It has a slight buttery taste and feel to it.  There is a mild, cleansing astringency to the tea, and only a very soft back note of bitterness that sort of rests on the back of the tongue.  This is not a distasteful or a “I-steeped-the-tea-too-long” kind of bitter taste, but, rather an enjoyable note that cuts through some of the sweetness of the fruit and tea.

The passion fruit is gently flavored – it doesn’t overwhelm the palate with its sweetness nor does it overpower the fresh, slightly vegetative taste of the green tea.  The fruit flavor is juicy, delicately sweet with just a hint of tartness.  This is really delicious.

This is a tea that is delicious served hot or iced – I prefer it iced with just a pinch of sugar to perk the flavor up just a little.  It is very refreshing!   I recommend adding this one to your shopping list for summertime – the tropical flavor of passion fruit offers the taste of a Hawaiian vacation, even if you can’t take one this year!

A Girl’s Best Friend from WhiteAugust Tea Company

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  WhiteAugust Tea Company

Product Description:

You’ll be distracted by this bright and shiny Tea.  A luxurious strand of Sri Lankan black tea, faceted with blueberries, elderberries and hibiscus gems.

Taster’s Review:

Some girls consider diamonds to be their best friend; me, I’d much rather have tea!  So this tea from WhiteAugust really interested me.  The name says just the way I feel when it comes to tea!

The dry leaf is quite beautiful and smells strongly of blueberry.  As it brews this berry aroma intensifies – filling the whole kitchen with the delicious scent of blueberries!  Yummy!

The flavor is quite pleasing.  The black tea base is the strongest flavor and it tastes rich and brisk.  Not at all bitter but there is some astringency that leaves the palate feeling clean, dry and ready for another sip.

The berry flavors are tart, but I am not finding it to be an undesirable flavor in this cup.  There is a light sweetness from the blueberry, and the hibiscus does its part by adding a slight reddish hue to the brewed liquor as well as a bit of its signature tartness.   And while I am not one who normally enjoys tart teas, I am finding that the level of tartness is just right for this particular tea.  I actually like the tartness in this tea!

This tea is delicious hot or iced.  I find it to be most delicious, though, when it is warm … not tepid or lukewarm; but at a nice, drinkable temperature that is warm enough to be a “hot” tea but not so hot that it burns the tongue.  At this point, I find that the flavor of the hibiscus has not yet “popped” so it is still at a pleasant tart level, and the flavors of the blueberry really shine through nicely while still allowing the black tea to be the star of the show.

So far, I have tried a few of WhiteAugust’s teas and I must say that I am incredibly impressed with them.  The teas are appealing to the nose and the eye as well as the palate.  They’ve a beautiful, easy-to-navigate website and they are incredibly nice too!  Everything one could want from a top-notch tea company!

Choco-Mate Tea from White August Tea Company

Tea Type: Yerba Mate/Rooibos Blend

Where To Buy: White August Tea Company

Product Description:

This energizing combination of sweet chocolate and south American mate is sure to stimulate your senses.

Tasters Review:

Over the last couple of months anything marked Choco & Mate I have been interested in trying!  When I saw this one from White August Tea Company I was equally if not MORE excited to try it!  All of the teas I have tried from this company I have enjoyed – as was the case with this specific offering!

Prior to infusing this smells like Chocolate Milk… Sweet Chocolate Milk!
After infusing it does lose a lot of the sweet aroma but you can still smell cocoa or chocolate just not as sweet and not nearly as strong as before infusing.

The taste is primarily Yerba Mate.  The Sweet Chocolate flavor comes thru nicely but I would LOVE to try it with even more Chocolate flavor!  There seems to be a little Rooibos Flavor coming thru, too. I have yet to put this to the test but I’m considering increasing the amount of loose leaf but infusing for a little less time to see if the chocolate comes thru more.

Regardless…this is tasty…a very good flavored Yerba Mate!  I would suggest this to anyone looking for a flavored Yerba Mate, a flavored Rooibos, or a Chocolate or Cocoa Flavored Tisane!

Don’t Call Me Pumpkin! from WhiteAugust Tea Company

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Rooibos

Where to Buy:  WhiteAugust Tea Company

Product Description:

A yummy blend of South African Rooibos, toasted pumpkin, ginger and cinnamon sprinkled with candy treats. Tea comes in a stylish tin and includes T-sacs, so you can enjoy your Tea on the Go.

Taster’s Review:

This is a whimsical looking tea.  The little pumpkin candies that you can see in the photo above are so tiny (much tinier than the photo might suggest!) and give this yummy pumpkin flavored rooibos a really fun attitude.

Not surprisingly, this tisane tastes very autumnal.  The pumpkin flavor is not as strong as I thought it would be, edged significantly by the flavors of cinnamon and ginger.  These are not spicy-hot tasting spices and they only a gentle warmth to the overall cup.  These spices taste more like accents in pumpkin pie rather than the sometimes super hot or peppery spices they can be.

The toasted pumpkin does not come across as a overwhelming flavor, but it does nicely disguise the rooibos taste – of which I can only taste a slight nutty hint of flavor.  As I continue to make my way down to the bottom of the cup, I find that the pumpkin flavor develops a bit more, but never really becomes extraordinarily strong here.  That being said, I think this cup presents itself as a very well-balanced set of flavors and is lightly sweet, warm, and comforting, and leaves a faint note of spice in the aftertaste.

I enjoyed my cup with a tiny drizzle of agave nectar and I found that this gave a little definition to the spices without making the cup too sweet.  Do taste it before you sweeten it though, because it does have a little bit of sweetness to the cup already (the little candy bits melt in the hot water!)

A lovely cup of pumpkin pie that you can enjoy all year round!
