Taster’s Review:

As I sit here, smelling the wonderful aroma that wafts from my teacup, I am reminded of autumn.  This Momijigari Black Tea Blend from Lupicia Tea smells … like autumn!  Like the smell of the air and the leaves and the apples.  There is a distinct wine-like character to the fragrance as well, with the faintest hints of smoke.

This is one of the more unique flavored teas that I’ve tasted … and it truly tastes like autumn to me.  It has notes of apple and apricot in the flavor – two fruits I think of when I think of harvest.  I like that while these are distinct flavor profiles here, they do not overpower the cup.

I’m also tasting a wine-like flavor – it is rustic and warm – like mulled wine without the spices.  I taste the faintest hints of smoke … reminiscent of the air that I would experience in the autumn as the air begins to cool and smoke is wafting from the chimneys.

And the black tea is not absent here either.  There is a warm, earthy tone to the background … not an aggressive or strong black tea flavor … but just enough to support the other flavors.

This is a very enjoyable cuppa from Lupicia Tea!

Yunnan Beauty from Mandala Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type: Oolong

Where to Buy: Mandala Tea

Tea Description:

One of our favorite oolong teas capable of many infusions.

This tea is a variation on a Taiwanese oolong named “Oriental Beauty”, utilizing large-leaf wild arbor Yunnan grown leaves.  Nearly black leaves and silver tips impart a dark, sweet, wine-like flavor unto the water.  Great no matter how you choose to brew it.  This tea is quickly becoming a favorite in the tea thermos.  It will keep well and develop new flavors over 2-3 years.

Taster’s Review:

Yunnan Beauty from Mandala Tea is a lovely sweet and aromatic oolong that looks much like a black tea in dry form.

The sweet aroma is present both in dry leaf and when steeped. There is a wonderful sweetness in the taste of this tea not quite honey but not quite molasses, more like sourgum. This lends to the tea being somewhat wine like in flavor, but not muscatel. If memory serves this tea is similar to a barley wine, but it has been years since I have sipped barely wine.

The flavor of this tea really coats your mouth leaving behind a long lasting delicious flavor and aroma that sticks in your nostrils. As you breath you can taste the tea even more.

At 6.00 per ounce, discounted to 21.60 if you purchase 4 ounces this tea is a steal for a high quality and totally unique oolong.

The tea has an interesting effect on the palate, in the front part of your mouth you will get a watery sensation but toward the back it is slightly drying. Not nearly as drying as some oolongs I have sipped but the drying effect is there. The watering mouth mixed with the drying in the back keeps you fully hydrated in between sips yet at the same time makes you just want another and another!

I really quite enjoy Mandala Tea’s Yunnan Beauty Oolong and am happy it is in my stash.

2nd Flush Assam from Tea Horse

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy: Tea Horse

Tea Description:

A malty, rich Assam, perfect for a morning cup. It has a rich caramel, almost burnt sugar flavour with a maltiness and hints of fruit. This is a versatile tea. As good with a hearty cooked breakfast, bacon butty or toast and pastries as with a slice of fruitcake, piece of gingerbread or rich dark chocolate in the afternoon. It pairs well with dishes using cinnamon or nutmeg, as well as Mexican food or red meats.

Taster’s Review:

2nd Flush Assam from Tea Horse may be the first tea I have ever had from this company. I cannot recall another before it. This 2nd Flush is a good morning cup. I find the flavors evolve more if you let it cool just slightly before sipping. Regardless, the flavors are strong with berry notes, and have lovely caramel and malty notes. I find the malty notes to be less intense than many assam however.

What I find most pleasing with this tea is that the berry notes turn to something like a wine flavor as the cup breathes a little – cooling slightly more.

The downside of this tea is that I find you have to get the exact right steep time or you could end up with a bitter brew, or one that lacks flavor.

I found the perfect steep time for me was right at the 2 minute mark while my SororiTea Sister LiberTeas preferred hers at a minute and a half. There may be a “sweet spot” for each person and their personal taste but by no means would I suggest steeping this as long as the directions which say 4 minutes.

Personally I think this would make a far better tea iced or cold steeped because the longer I sip on this cup, the more flavors evolve with the caramel and malt waking up even more.

It is relatively bright in the mouthfeel however, its not heavy, or creamy, or even all that robust. It may not be the morning tea for everyone depending on how strong you like your morning tea to be.

I am glad that I have got to sample a Tea Horse tea and I look forward to trying more in the future.

Pink Sonoma Wine Infused White Tea from Red Leaf Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  White

Where to Buy:  Red Leaf Tea

Tea Description:

We are proud to introduce our newest wine infused tea, the Pink Sonoma!

Thoroughly saturated with the flavor of a light cabernet, Pink Sonoma is based on the sweetness of a strong white tea. We have given this base a powerful floral aroma and body by adding a good measure of rose petals, as well as a light touch of jasmine. Try steeping Pink Sonoma in boiling water for a little over two minutes, at a ration of one teaspoon tea leaf each five ounces of water.

Taster’s Review:

I know I’ve said on many occasions that I’m not a big wine drinker.  My husband has been trying a few wines lately and has been enjoying them, and is trying to get me back in to wine (I used to drink them more some years ago, but now I prefer my tea, thank you very much!)   But I must say that if I were given a glass of wine and I took a sip and it tasted like this, I’d happily finish the glass and might even consider another.

This is a beautifully floral tasting tea – I like that it’s floral but it isn’t overdone.  Notes of rose with hints of jasmine add a lovely sweetness to the cup without tasting perfume-y or soapy.  These floral notes accent the wine notes as well as the flavor of the white tea.

The wine is pleasant, with fruit tones – a soft grape, maybe a hint of apple in there.  Crisp and enjoyable, a flavor that seems to glide over the palate easily.

The white tea is not overpowered by these flavors, either.  It is a soft taste, not vegetative, exactly, and not of hay or other notes that I often taste with white tea … it just tastes of white tea – soft and delicate.

Served hot, this tea has an agreeable flavor, but I think I prefer it iced.  Even though the weather is such that I seldom enjoy iced tea right now, after trying this one hot, I decided I’d let it cool and try it iced.  And I must say, this is so much more refreshing chilled.  The fruit notes really pop, and the overall cup is very sweet and flavorful … this is one I might stock up on when the warm weather returns!

Taster’s Review:

The sample packet that I have for this tea just says “Red Vineyard” not Red Peach Vineyard, but when I compared the ingredient list on my package to the online ingredient list, they are identical so I think I’m pretty safe in assuming that this tea that I’m sipping right now is indeed Red Peach Vineyard.

This is LOVELY!

I know I probably sound a bit like a broken record when I state that I’m not one to imbibe alcohol, but it’s true, and it always seems like a relevant fact when I encounter teas that are wine inspired.  I don’t really care much for the taste of alcohol … every once in a while, I take a sip of something, but, I just don’t care for the taste of it.  Even alcoholic beverages that supposedly have no taste, like vodka, I can taste something there, and I’m not fond of it.  That doesn’t mean that I’m not tempted to try something every once in a while – I mean when I see something like “caramel flavored vodka” or “Almond Roca Wine,” I’m intrigued.  But, I think that is more about my sweet tooth than about the actual alcoholic beverage.  And I will on a very rare occasion indulge in a mixed cocktail that taste more of sweet fruit than of fermented spirits, but these occasions are indeed rare, and again, the sweeter they are (and the less like alcohol they taste) the better I like them.

But for whatever reason, I usually enjoy wine inspired or wine infused teas.  And I don’t know if this tea is actually wine flavored, or if it’s just inspired by the idea of a California Vineyard (Strawberries make me think of California … peaches don’t, however, peaches do grow quite well in California!)  Either way, I do taste a sort of wine-y element to this cup.  Like a sweet red wine.  Slightly grape-y flavor with a hint of fermentation and the slight astringency to this tea play to the wine-like characters of this tea.

The black tea has a very pleasing quality to it.  It is a well-rounded tea, it is strong but not what I’d call “bold,” really, and it has a hint of flowery intonation and an undertone of earthiness that also play to the wine-y character of this tea.

But the real stars of this particular show are the flavors of peach and strawberry.  I love this combination, and it is one that I think I’d like to see offered more often in tea blends.  The sweet, luscious flavor of the peach complements the sweet berry very well, there is just a twinge of tartness to the cup from the berry, but overall, this is a sweet, fruity tea that is really quite enjoyable.

Another great cuppa from Fusion Teas!
