One of the things I find cool about blending flavored teas is that I can combine flavors that might not otherwise get combined. I’ve never seen butterscotch and banana combined in anything else, but guess what? It’s an awesome combination. Hope you like it as much as I do!

Taster’s Review:

Tasty!

At least once a month, I receive a package from 52Teas.  I subscribe to their monthly package, which means that all the teas of the week are sent to me at the end of the month, after the final tea of the week for that month has been created.

For the month of November, THIS Butterscotch Banana Flavored Black Tea from 52Teas is the tea I was really looking forward to.  Butterscotch and Banana?  Yes please!  I have been a fan of Frank’s banana teas for quite some time, and to combine it with the rich, buttery, caramel-y taste of butterscotch seems sort of … well, heavenly to me.

And this is really good.  There is a bit more butterscotch than there is banana, and that was a wee bit disappointing, because I found myself searching for the banana flavor.  Oh, I can taste the banana, but, there seems to be a little less banana flavor than I was hoping for.

That said, this is still a really good tea.  The butterscotch notes are really yummy.  And I love the way they meld with the black tea flavor – it tastes quite creamy and decadent.  The black tea is robust and invigorating, and the butterscotch softens the black tea just a tad.  The banana notes come in about mid-sip, and they are there … I just found myself wanting more banana.

Overall, a very enjoyable cuppa.  I found that this tea definitely benefits from a short cooling time (most teas do) so that the flavors can emerge.  That said, don’t let it cool too long, because I preferred this one hot.  Still tasty when it’s cold, I found that the butterscotch notes were much more indulgent tasting when the tea is hot.

Taster’s Review:

Butterscotch from The Persimmon Tree is really a good interesting tea blend. It seems to be more on the scotch side than the butter. For a candy inspired tea it really is not that sweet, or candy like. I get a strong scotch flavor in the blend, as in the alcohol.

The mouthfeel is medium heavy and the cup color is a nice clear light brown. I have also had this tea cold and it keeps its flavor profile quite nicely. A lot of teas taste different when hot versus cold, but this is the same either way.

Adding some sweetener, I used German Rock Sugar, does help bring out the candy like flavor in the tea, more like those golden yellow butterscotch candies you can get at the dime store. Even still I get a heavy scotch flavor from the tea mostly.

There is a creamy or buttery like mouthfeel to a degree, but not so much on the butter flavor. I personally would like it to be a bit more candy like but that is just a personal preference. To be honest, I think more people will appreciate this tea for its pure and direct flavor. It is not another overly sweetened, overly flavored, fake candy tea. It is absolutely a fresh and organic blend which I appreciate even if my taste buds would like it to be a bit sweeter.

Persimmon Tree Tea really does tea well when it comes to offering all natural and organic ingredients! Check out more about what The Persimmon Tree does for our world here.

Taster’s Review:

Butterscotch Matcha?  Um … YES please!

This Butterscotch Flavored Matcha from Red Leaf Tea is absolutely YUMMY!  Sweet and deliciously treat-y!  This makes a perfect dessert if you want something decadent tasting without the calories that often goes with such an indulgence.  Even when prepared as a latte (with the addition of milk) this Matcha has fewer calories than a rich dessert would, and as an added bonus, you also get the health benefits of the powdered green tea leaf!

As I’ve often mentioned, one of my favorite things about the flavored Matcha selections from Red Leaf Tea is that you can customize your flavored Matcha experience.  You can choose flavor levels that range from “Delicate” to “There’s Matcha in There?!” (Suggesting that it tastes more like the flavor than the tea itself) … and I like that I have that choice.  I also like that I can choose the grade of Matcha – from Classic to Imperial … I can also choose to have a white tea Matcha, black tea Matcha or a Red tea Matcha (made from Rooibos) … and I can choose to have Organic or conventionally grown tea.  If I think that a blend might be tasty with a 50-50 mix of white tea Matcha and Green Tea Matcha … I can choose that too!  I love all the options that are offered from Red Leaf Tea!

This particular flavored matcha was crafted using the Classic grade Matcha with a Robust amount of flavoring.  And I like that I taste both the Matcha and the Butterscotch here.  The butterscotch flavor is strong but doesn’t overpower the sweet, slightly vegetal taste of the Matcha.  There is a delightful balance here that is really delicious.

This is a Matcha that I recommend trying as a latte – the butterscotch flavor lends itself well to the creaminess from a latte!  When prepared traditionally, the Matcha is itself a creamy tasting/textured tea so you do get a certain creaminess from the traditional preparation, but, I find that by adding a splash of warmed milk I get a much more satisfying taste and texture.  The milk really plays to the sweet, caramel-esque notes of the butterscotch.

So yummy!!!

Tea Information:

Leaf Type: Black

Where to Buy: Angelina’s Teas

Tea Description:

BUTTERSCOTCH (Black Tea with natural flavors) Country of Origin: Sri Lanka Region: Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula or Uva districts Shipping Port: Colombo Grade: OP (Orange Pekoe) Altitude: 4800 – 7600 feet above sea level Manufacture Type: Orthodox Cup Characteristics: Smooth and creamy with that Highland taste – a dash of sugar will help open it up. Infusion: Bright and Coppery. Ingredients: Black tea, Elder blossom, Calendula petals, Natural flavors. Information: There is no question that the good people of Scotland can be credited with introducing the world to many, many fine things. For example: the fine game of golf, the handsome kilt, and Scotch. What is in question however is whether or not the Scots can take credit for introducing humankind to Butterscotch. There are people in Scotland will argue up and down that yes, the Scots were the ones who first boiled down brown sugar and butter to create the sweet hard candy. However, there are those who will argue up and down that in fact the confection derives its name from the process of scorching the butter, a process that in older times was known as scotching. Aha, but the Scots will argue, the scotching of butter was invented in Scotland! The truth is, the actual origin of butterscotch has been lost in the mists of time. We shall perhaps never get to the bottom of the dispute. What we can get to the bottom of time and time again however is a delicious cup of piping hot butterscotch tea. This tea is wonderful with a dash of milk to open up the buttery sweet flavor. You can also try it over ice if you like. Its like candy in a cup! What type of tea do we use, how do we flavor the tea and why do we use natural flavors? Firstly… we only use high grown teas from the top 3 tea growing regions of Sri Lanka – Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula and Uva. These three high-grown districts produce flavorful teas that have classic Ceylon tea character which is noted by floral bouquet and flavor notes, touches of mild astringency, bright.

Taster’s Review:

In the dry leaf form, Butterscotch from Angelina’s Teas has a funky vinegar like aroma that is off putting, however due to my long search for the perfect butterscotch tea I steeped it anyway. I am glad that I did. While this may not make it to my top ranks in butterscotch flavored teas, it is quite nice, especially nice the more it cools. This may be resigned to being an iced tea for the summertime, but once steeped that off putting vinegar aroma fades and leaves behind a mildly sweet butterscotch flavor. Even yummier with a dash of milk and some sweetener. I prefer almond milk and sugar in the raw or german rock sugar myself.

Angelina’s Teas has an amazing assortment of teas and you can really get lost in their web site gazing at all their tea variety! They also offer tea ware of all types, and food items as well.

Angelina’s shipping was super fast which of course is a plus.

I love the through descriptions on Angelina’s site! They really go into great detail describing each tea and it can be very educational.

Is this the ultimate tea? No, quite honestly it is not. However it is a good tea, at a more than fair price, just 2.14 USD per ounce.

I would suggest that anyone new to the world of teas give Angelina’s a try. They have so many variety of teas to select from, from flavored, to straight, and they give you a really great idea of what is out there.

Now in fairness, I was in the mood for some flavored teas when I placed my order, but Angelina’s Teas does offer higher quality teas as well such as Dragonwell Lung Ching, Aged Wu Yi Oolong, as well as offerings in Pu-erh, and mate, just to give you an idea of the selection on their site.

As for this tea, its just all right, nothing to jump up and down about, but absolutely one to keep around for iced tea in the summer at the price it is offered at its not a bad idea!

Taster’s Review:

When I measured out this Butterscotch Toffee Black Tea Blend from Compass Teas, I was kind of surprised to see all the stems in the tea.  I thought to myself, this is a really “stemmy” tea … which is sometimes indicative of a poor quality tea, but, in this case, I don’t think that’s true.  After reading the description and ingredient list on the Compass Teas Website, and seeing “Camellia Sinensis Stems” as one of the ingredients, I realize this is supposed to be a stemmy tea!

My first couple of sips of this tea … all I could really taste was a strong, earthy, somewhat “roasted” tea flavor, but nothing that resembled either butterscotch or toffee.  Then I allowed it to cool for a few minutes (maybe five minutes?  The tea was still pleasantly hot, but not piping hot), and the flavors began to pop.  Now I could taste a rich, buttery taste along with a sweet, caramel-y note.  YUM!

And even though this is a sweet tasting tea, and even with a name like Butterscotch Toffee … I’m not finding this to be a cloyingly sweet tea.  It is definitely what I’d call a dessert tea, but, it doesn’t taste too sweet.

I’m also gratified to find that the strongest flavors of this cup are not the butterscotch or the toffee … but the tea!  The tea is a robust black tea … it’s good and strong, and I think that the stems of the Camellia Sinensis gives this tea a pleasantly “roasted” kind of flavor that almost mimics a coffee-like richness.  This is a tea that would be very satisfying served as a breakfast tea, it has that hearty flavor that I want first thing in the morning … and that it is a Butterscotch Toffee tea … makes it a delightful indulgence too.

I recommend trying this as a latte too … it makes a really decadent treat!
