Taster’s Review:

When I first opened the pouch of this tea, I noticed the aroma.  It is a strong scent and is reminiscent of leather.  A very masculine scent.

To brew this tea, I put a scoop of the leaves into my small (warmed) teapot and added 12 ounces of boiling water to the teapot and allowed the tea to steep for 3 minutes and then strained the liquid into my favorite tea mug.  The color is dark and the fragrance is softer than that of the dry leaf, smelling vaguely of leather, perhaps, but more like sweet fruit – almost like a sweet, sugary date.

AzoresShadeGrownBlack1My first sip I took as I was looking at the description above that says “a light and smooth start with a brisk full finish.”  Yeah, I agree with that.  It starts out light with a delicate citrus note but smoother, not quite as astringent as citrus fruit but with the sweetness of an a sweet orange.  It is a bright yet smooth note.  As the sip progresses, I pick up on more of a sweeter, denser type of fruit.  Like a combination of a ripe plum and a ripe peach – all the sweetness of those two fruits but none of the tartness.  As I near the finish, I pick up on some of the sweet caramel-y undertones.

This has a bracing flavor that is very rich and rewarding.  It’s a bold tasting tea, maybe not quite as invigorating as I would want my first cup of tea for the day to be, but this would be an excellent choice for late morning or mid-day.  A great “tea-time” type of tea:  perhaps with some scones or shortbread?  It has that rich, freshly baked type of flavor that I like:  somewhat bready and very satisfying.   It would probably take the additions of milk and honey well, but, I rather like it straight up.  The flavor is sweet and smooth and additions may just overwhelm the tea.  Try this one before you add anything to it.

Another winning tea from What-Cha!  I think that’s all they sell there, because I’ve tried a lot of teas from them and haven’t come across anything disappointing yet!

Taster’s Review:

I absolutely LOVE the aroma of the dry leaf of this Autumn Houjicha from the Takea Family … part of August’s Monthly Mystery Tea Sampler’s Club package from Yunomi!  It SMELLS like autumn!  I can smell the roasted leaves, and it smells a bit like the smoke wafting out of a fireplace … but there’s something else about the fragrance of this tea too that is evoking the spirit of autumn for me.  It … makes me think of the leaves as they change from green to orange, yellow and red before they fall to the ground.  It reminds me of the smell of the crisp air that surrounds me as I go for a walk on an autumn afternoon.  Yes … all of this from just a quick whiff of the dry leaf of the tea!

The flavor is also very autumnal with it’s roasty-toasty taste.  This is one of those teas that you want to pour into a cup and then just cuddle under a blanket and enjoy the splendor of autumn from your favorite space in front of the fireplace.

This is toasty and nutty in taste.  It has a nice sweetness, reminiscent of honey but not quite as thick.  It also has notes of caramel … but this would be a very light, thin caramel … like the taste the sugar begins to take on just as it’s starting to break down from the heat when you’re making homemade caramel.  It isn’t an overpowering sweetness … just enough to keep me coming back for more!

It has a warm, roasted taste to it … and as I sip it, I’m contemplating how this will taste when I add some genmai to it for my review of the Genmai later this month.  The Genmai was also in this month’s Yunomi Monthly Mystery Tea Sampler’s Club package, so I’ll get to make my own “custom” genmaicha using some of this delicious Houjicha (as well as the Bancha that I reviewed previously.)

I’m thinking that this was a perfect tea to include in this package to enjoy during these first few days of autumn … because it’s such a lovely celebration of the season!  I love this!

Taster’s Review:

I know that I’ve mentioned before just how much I love receiving a monthly mystery tea sampler’s club package from Yunomi every month.  And this Organic Midori First Flush tea from NaturaliTea (if you’re looking on the website, this is the #01 tea from NaturaliTea) is an example of why I love receiving these teas.  This is SO fresh.  I absolutely love it when I can see and taste the freshness in a tea.

The color of the dry leaf is so vibrant and they are a dark, forest-y green.  I can smell the vegetal quality of these leaves, it smells like something in between just-cut spring grass, freshly steamed vegetables and kelp.  It has that aroma that is just ALIVE with vegetation.

And the flavor is equally as fresh tasting.  It has a sweetness to it and a sharp bitter taste of a good quality Japanese green tea.  The bitterness offers a really lovely, savory contrast to the sweetness of the young leafy taste.  I like the balance of savory to sweet here … it is neither too sweet nor too bitter … it is just a pleasure to sip!

It has a light, brothy character to it … it just FEELS good when I drink it … I can feel it rejuvenate me as I sip.  It tastes fresh and it refreshes the palate as it washes over the tongue.  This tea … just speaks to me of springtime:  from the taste of the young leaves of the spring harvest to the fresh fragrance and flavor.  It is a very refreshing beverage!

About Yunomi:

Matcha Latte Media KK was launched in January 2012 as a result of founder Ian Chun’s work with Kyoto Obubu Tea Plantations (see Starting a Tea Business – Background). Our mission was to put Japanese culture into the hands of consumers around the world. We feel that many products, including Japanese tea, gain much of their value from an understanding of the culture and society behind them, not simply from their physical qualities. Many of these cultural products in Japan are produced by small-scale producers, and we had hoped to bring them to global markets by providing an e-commerce marketing service.

However, the Japanese tea industry called to us, and as a product so central to Japanese culture, we fell in love. 2013 marks our pivot from a consultancy into a tea business with the Yunomi.us website. We hope you will support us and follow along as we build a paradigm changing business.

Taster’s Review:

This Certified Organic Oolong Tea by the Takeo Family from Yunomi is quite unique … different from any Oolong that I’ve ever tried!  And in this case … different is definitely GOOD!

The flavor is mild, sweet, and fruity.  There is a sort of tangy note that tickles the tip of the tongue toward the finish, and that tingly sensation lasts into the aftertaste.  Almost like a “sweet and sour” note!  Quite intriguing…

This tea hints at floral notes in the distance … although I would not call this tea a floral tea.  These are mere hints … like a whisper of a breeze that has passed through a field of flowers and picked up on just a hint of the floral essence … that’s what I detect here.  This is much more fruity than floral, tasting of stone fruit, with hints of toasted nuts and a slight earthy tone and notes of mellow spice.

I brewed this tea in my gaiwan (as I do with most Oolong teas) and this allowed me to re-steep the leaves several times with very positive results.  The flavor changed with each new cup of tea … the fruity notes became sweeter and more mild as I reached my third cup.  By this time, those hints of flower in the distance have subsided, but there is still this lovely, sort of exotic sweet and sour note that keeps me captivated.

A really enjoyable Oolong … one I’d recommend to all Oolong enthusiasts … especially if you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary!  This is truly a unique Oolong – one that deserves discovery!
