Spotlight on Fraser Tea Bags

Sustainable business models are so hot right now. Seriously, Zoolander aside, I’m all about capitalists that care about future generations. Fraser Tea sells organic tea blends in corn-based, sustainably produced pyramids. I think it’s a great option to consider bringing in to your cubicle or on vacations. I received several of their pyramids in my tea mail this month, so their spotlight is a little from Column A and a little from Column B…

Spicy Chocolate Chai – flavored puerh

First things first, a girls gotta have her chocolate. There were oils on top of brew, which always equate to having been carefully handled and thus retain more of the goodness we expect from full leaf teas. A sneaky Chai taste followed by a  mellow chocolate aftertaste. The tiniest bit of sweetener rounded out these flavors. I want to point out for later on, those of you hardcore readers, that this tea has 60 mg caffeine.

Chamomile Dream – herbal

To me, Sleepy-time teas are the most swoon-worthy. There’s always something about them that is so restorative and comforting.  This pyramid has sweet smelling dry leaves. As soon as that scent connects in my brain, there’s that instant calming response. I know i’m not the only one!

The blend of wet leaves smell just as sweet, and I notice an enticing hint of a berry red in them now. This tastes like soft, pillowy, dreamy meadows… full of sheep, so many sheep, mmm and it feels like time to say goodnight.

Turmeric Ginger Green – flavored green

Ok, preface, turmeric and I got off on the wrong foot when it stained my gravity strainer for no good reason. I have been suspicious of its health claims ever since… but that’s a personal bias which does not discount dozens of peer-reviewed scientific studies…  I also need to state that my toddler helped me brew this and ripped the bag 😬 kay, so still waiting for the great feelings. Moving on, I found I prefer this ingredient in bag form because it eliminates my first problem with staining. So my palate has started to open up to tea for health reasons, as opposed to familiar tastes. There is an acquired taste to this tea, but it is not in your face. It certainly would be a perfect finish to a savory lunch.

Yerba Mint – alternative tea

Until now I never realized how powerful other plants could be in the caffeine department! I guess I should have known that from coffee beans, but I never put it all together until I saw there was 70+ mg caffeine in this non-camellia sinensis plant!!! Yikes! That probably explains a few restless nights after “just some herbal” tea… The juxtaposition between earthy and gentle is juuuuuuust right here. I can imagine putting this over ice would be a delightful way to ignore a humid summer.

Organic Turmeric with Meadowsweet & Ginger from Traditional Medicinals. . . . .

My latest Sipsby box arrived and in it was several packages of this Organic Turmeric with Meadowsweet & Ginger tea by Traditional Medicinals. This isn’t something I would have ever picked for myself but I guess something in my profile suggested I would enjoy it. I guess that in and of itself warrants giving this a try.

Well it is not bad but it is also not a tea I would be all that interested in having again. I don’t often reach for herbals and this is a herbal through and through. When hot, there is a ginger burn, though just slightly and even that touch of burn is drowned out by a sweetness that I want to attribute to the Meadowsweet (but that is because of the name as I haven’t had this herb previously and when I tried researching what it is supposed to taste like, it just said “pleasant”). Before that burn and sweetness sets in though, there is a savory bitterness and that I think is contributed by the turmeric.

Each ingredient brings something different and for those that like these flavors, this could be a nice combination of the bunch. However, for me tea is about desserts and indulgence. This tastes like medicine to me which isn’t the indulgence I am looking for, though I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised when drinking a tea from a company called Traditional Medicinals.

Description

Inflammation might get a bad rap, but it really can be a useful signal after exercise. Our formula honors this indication with turmeric, a root praised by healers around the world. Reinforced by the power of meadowsweet— historically used much like turmeric—and ginger’s warming properties, our tea represents an herbal trifecta of ancient wisdom and soothing relief.*

Spicy Turmeric Tonic from MEM Tea. . . .

A new specialty shop opened up nearby, and when I poked my head inside I discovered they also served coffee and tea.  On a blustery, cold day I ordered a cup of Spicy Turmeric Tonic from MEM Tea to warm my body and spirit.

This tea was listed as having flavors of cacao, ginger, and cinnamon, all long-time favorites of mine.  Oddly, the turmeric in the name wasn’t listed as a main flavor.  I had this blend brewed hot without milk or sweetener.

As a lover of chai teas, this was a delicious new blend filled with familiar spices.  The cinnamon and ginger were very forward, warming and gently spicy.  The cacao shells gave the blend more body, almost fooling me into thinking it was a black tea instead of an herbal.  The cacao brought its usual sweet-and-savory cocoa notes to balance out the sweet-and-hot ginger.

The turmeric was subtle, appearing as just a touch of earthy spice behind the brighter flavors.  The turmeric does show up in the color of the brew, with its trademark bright yellow ochre color.

Full disclosure, cacao shells don’t have caffeine, but they are stimulants, so this might not be a true decaf blend. Either way, it was a wonderful new take on an herbal chai and I will definitely plan to brew another a cup of Spicy Turmeric Tonic sometime soon.

Daily Support from Lipton Teas . . . . .

Lipton, yes that Lipton with the red tagged black tea bags.  Lipton has a series of new wellness teas and the SororiTea Sisters are checking them out. This time, I’m tasting Daily Support blend.  This blend features turmeric, echinacea, ginger, and green tea.

Turmeric seems to be everywhere when the new year rolls around and people make new resolutions about living healthier and cleaner for the new year.  Turmeric comes up as one of those spices with lots of healthy properties like reducing inflammation and boosting antioxidants. I’m not a doctor, but I like trying new tea flavors so I took the plunge and brewed a cup.

Tumeric on its own can be a bit too strong and bitter.  It is spicy, but more reminiscent of curry powder than chai spices.  I find I like tumeric best when paired with ginger, like it is in this Daily Support blend.  Their spiciness compliments each other, bringing out the sweet heat in the ginger and the earthier spice of the turmeric.

I’m a spice-lover when it comes to tea, so I would say that this blend could use more ginger and turmeric to suit my tastes.  However, if you’re not into a hot-spiced blend, this might be a nice surprise.  The ginger is at its sweetest, with gentle honey and lemon undertones, and just a hint of the more savory turmeric in the aftertaste.  The green tea itself gets lost under these two powerhouses, but you don’t miss it.

I’ve had great success with tumeric ginger lattes at my local coffee shop.  I’ll have to try this tea with some frothy milk next time for a cozy, creamy cup of spice. No matter how you brew it, this is a perfect warming cup for turning over a new leaf and giving your body and mind some Daily Support.
