Our Hattialli Golden Lion Assam originates from the Hattialli Tea Estate in the Dibrugarh District in the South Bank, Assam region of India. The name Hattialli comes from the words “Hatti Alli”, which means Elephant Road. This name came about because of a nearby elephant camp. The Hattialli Tea Estate is known for golden tippy handpicked teas and the balance of briskness and mellowness of their teas. The golden tips of this tea are longer than the black leaves, which imparts a more golden appearance. This phenomenal malty second flush Assam has baked bread and oak notes. Sweet potato and dried apricot notes are also detectable with fleeting lighter floral notes. There is a fruity sweetness and light astringency present in this truly exceptional second flush Assam.

Taster’s Review:

I find myself in total agreement with the last five words of the above description – this Hattialli Golden Lion Assam Tea from Butiki Teas is indeed a truly exceptional second flush Assam.  Wow!

When hot, the flavor is sweet and malty.  There is a slight caramel-y note to it, reminding me of the flavor of the warm, caramelized edges of a freshly baked loaf of bread.  There are hints of woodsy tones, and it is a very cozy, sort of autumnal taste.  The kind of flavors you like to warm up to on a chilly autumn day … but, you still find it perfectly alright to cozy up to these flavors on a warm summer morning too!

As the tea begins to cool (slightly … it’s still hot, just not quite as hot as when I first poured the cup) the flavors of sweet apricot begin to emerge.  I’ve tasted quite a few Assam teas in my years as a tea drinker, but, I can’t recall such a distinct apricot flavor from a pure Assam as the taste I’m getting from this cup of Assam.  It’s remarkable (and YUMMY!)

The description also suggests notes of sweet potato, and I get those too, but, it isn’t as well-defined as the apricot.  To me, the apricot really stands out.

There are a lot of great Assam teas out there, and there are definitely a few that I favor over others … this one definitely deserves to be one of those favorites!  It’s really good.  I would be very happy to start every day with this tea in my cup!

Taster’s Review:

Mmm!  Mmm!  Mmm!  This Caramel Vanilla Assam Tea from Butiki Teas is really YUMMY!

I am finding myself in full agreement with the above description … the caramel and vanilla notes DO meld with this tea in such a way that they taste as though they are naturally part of the Assam.  Really, these flavors just add to the richness of the tea … giving it a more satisfying roundness, and accentuating the lovely natural sweetness of the Assam.  Notes of raisin, freshly baked cookies (you know the caramelized edges of the cookie?  Yeah, that part!), hints of chocolate and slight notes of earth are noted.  Toward the finish, I pick up on a slight fruit note peeking though.

The Assam base here is Butiki Teas’ Taiwanese Assam which I have not yet tried  “pure” or on its own but after tasting this tea, I realize that I need to add it to my next order with Butiki Teas so that I can try it, because I’m really enjoying this Assam.  It is rich and smooth, malty and robust … and I taste less of that “hint” of bitterness that often comes through with an Assam.  It is mildly astringent, but again, I am noticing less astringency here than I would normally notice with an Assam.

I like the way the Assam assimilates with the flavors of caramel and vanilla.  It is sweet and comforting … it’s one of those “cozy” kind of tastes that you want to curl up to after a trying day … or if you just want to start off the day by assuaging your sweet tooth, this tea will get your blood pumping and satiate the sweet tooth too!   It would make a great latte too, although I find it most satisfying as a straight up cuppa … it doesn’t need anything else!

Taster’s Review:

I love sweet and salty snacks, Rwanda Rukeri from Butiki Teas satisfies both cravings for me. Even though I have had this sample hanging around for quite some time, and I never should have neglected it, the taste is so fresh that I can only imagine how amazing it was when I first got it!

Rwanda Rukeri is green, vegetal, grassy, and sweet, with lingering notes of freshness that do remind me of seaweed but more so ocean mist. If you have ever visited the coast and appreciate nature the way that I do, there is a smell, a feeling, an aura, and energy about being near the ocean. That is the way this tea makes me feel.

I do pick up the artichoke note which is surprising to me as I have only had artichoke made properly a handful of times. Artichokes intimidate me so beyond some canned artichoke in a salad or dip here or there I have limited experience, as I can’t cook (or is it bake?) artichoke myself.

This tea is better when you go gong fu style because it truly evolves releasing more flavors the more you steep it! Buttery notes come forward in later steepings. I do not recommend this tea if you are wanting to make something fast and run out the door because you will miss out on a really wonderful experience. It also needs to be steeped properly or you could end up with a bitter or overly astringent cup. This is a delicate tea that needs to be treated with respect but it will give you that back and so much more.

Obviously this is not the first tea I reach for in the morning while I still have the duhs but in the afternoon or early evening I love it. Its a tea to relax with, a tea to contemplate, a tea to relish in.

2003 Reserve Four Seasons Oolong Tea from Butiki Teas

Our aged oolong is sourced from the Dong Ding tea growing region of Nantou County in Taiwan and was harvested in the spring of 2003. The varietal is Si Ji Chuan also known as Four Season. Our aged oolong was crafted by blend master Chen Pei Wen and is re-roasted every 2-3 years to minimize moisture content. 2003 Reserve Four Season Oolong is a rich full-bodied silky tea. The charcoal-colored leaves of this smooth oolong produce notes of honey suckle, bark, and grass and has a natural sweetness with no astringency present. This tea is also low in caffeine.

Taster’s Review:

The aroma of the dry leaf of this 2003 Reserve Four Seasons Oolong Tea from Butiki Teas surprised me a little.  Normally, when I smell an Oolong, I smell floral notes, or sometimes hints of vegetation or sometimes fruit tones.  I didn’t smell any of these notes … instead, I could detect notes of earth and even a pipe tobacco-y kind of scent.  My SororiTea Sister, Azzrian, described the scent as

reminiscent of a campfire, or an old library, slightly musty, with a hint of leather

and yeah … I get those comparisons as well.  It definitely has an “old” kind of smell … like something I’d associate with a distinguished, elderly, well-read gentleman who smokes a pipe.

Given the hint of earth to the aroma, I expected this tea to have an almost pu-erh-ish kind of flavor to it, even though it’s an Oolong.  And it does have a flavor that is vaguely similar to that of an earthy pu-erh.  But it is also very Oolong-ish in many respects … like a dark, charcoal-roasted Oolong.

It is indeed earthy, but I do not find the earthy tones to be overwhelming or off-putting.  I like the way these earthy tones mingle with the roasted notes, creating an almost “coffee-like” taste to me.  It has a sweetness that reminds me of molasses.  Very distant floral notes in the distance … these are almost overpowered by the strong roasted tones, but, if I focus on the flavors I can taste them.  In the foreground, there are notes of leather, tobacco and oak.  This is definitely a masculine kind of tea … very rugged and yet very distinguished.

I really enjoyed this tea … and I enjoyed taking it through its paces as it delivered many wonderful, delicious infusions.  This is one tea that is definitely worth the time to get to know, especially if you’re one who appreciates a truly unique Oolong!

Taster’s Review:

It’s been a long while since I sampled Pistachio Ice Cream from Butiki Teas but this fine tea was featured in the Amoda Sampler that I split with my SororiTea Sister Anne. I am happy to have some back in my tea stash!

Normally, when a tea has an oily like top coat I am not too fond of it, but this is so pretty because it literally sparkles like diamonds, or glitter on the top of my cup, and does not take away from the experience of taste of this tea at all. Even with the slight “oily like” top coat the cup is clear to the bottom and such a BEAUTIFUL golden color!

The flavor profile of this tea is lavish, creamy, indulgent, but not excessively sweet, unless you wish to add sweetener, but its not really needed, and just oh so good! The aroma is enticing with that distinct pistachio smell that translates perfectly into the sip.

The aftertaste falls more on the nutty side rather than creamy, but the vanilla does help pull the sweetness through just a little on the palate in the aftertaste.

The lingering result however is the fresh green tea aftertaste which is light but distinct, grassy, nutty, and even a bit buttery.

I love this tea.
