Coconut Carrot Cashew Assam from A Quarter To Tea. . . . .

When I saw this blend on A Quarter to Tea’s website and I told it to my significant other, he wrinkled his nose and said he didn’t think it would sound good. I, on the other hand, was intrigued. I have never seen cashews in a blend before and was curious as to how it would translate. So I bought a taster and it was the second tea I tried from my first order from them.

The dry leaf smelled like carrot cake, sweet cashews, and coconut. It is very enticing, warm, and comforting. I steeped the whole sample in my 16oz mug for 4 minutes with near-boiling water. The smell of the steeping liquid was totally coconutty! I could also smell the malty Assam. I added a little agave and gave it a stir, breathing in the hot coconut-smelling liquid. Yum! If coconut cake and carrot cake had a baby, this tea would be the child! The Assam is bold and prevalent in this blend, perhaps I shouldn’t have used the entire sample, but no worries because it is still very good. The carrot and coconut are both very prominent, but unfortunately it would seem that the cashew may have been overpowered by those two components. I keep feeling like I can taste the cashew, but then I wonder if i’m just confusing it with the coconut. Either way, this tea is very nutty. The carrot part lends a sweet, smooth, and vegetal flair that pairs nicely with the malty Assam and nuts.

I would say that A Quarter to Tea is 2 for 2! I love both blends I’ve tried thus far and will be highly recommending them to everyone. They really have done a fantastic job putting these teas together. I could drink both that I’ve tried all day, everyday! Check them out for sure.

Coconut Cream Pie from 52Teas. . . . .

I met my now-husband almost half my life ago, when I was still in high school. (This is going somewhere, I promise). A fact about him is that he HATES COCONUT. Like, violently. It’s a “texture thing.” So, for the last 14 years, whenever we split dessert, it is not the coconut dessert. I have not had coconut in about a decade and a half.

And oh gosh, guys, I didn’t realize I liked coconut so much.

DID YOU KNOW? COCONUT IS VERY SWEET AND TASTY.

When I got this coconut sample to try, I was super-hype to try it. Coconut: THE FINAL FRONTIER.

And this sweet ‘zert tea delivers. It’s so sweet and rich. It’s like actually eating a honking piece of cake/pie, minus the thigh expansion. It’s the best of both worlds.

In summary: if you like coconut, you’ll like this tea. If you’re not sure if you like coconut, you probably do, and you’ll like this tea. If you don’t like coconut… I’m not sure why you read this review. But thanks for doing so. I appreciate your time. Enjoy your day.

Description

I was pretty excited when people asked that this tea be included in the vote for the 2016 12 Teas of Christmas, and even happier when this tea turned out to be one of the top vote getters. This has been one of the more memorable 52Teas blends for me – I love coconut! – so I was really happy to have the opportunity to reblend it.

The original description of this tea said:

Our Coconut Cream Pie flavored black tea has been one of our bestsellers here at Zoomdweebie’s since we opened. In addition to the pouches of this tea that we’ve sold, we sell a LOT of beverages made from this tea, in particular, this is probably our all time bestselling iced tea latte, one sip of which has led people to exclaim, “That’s like coconut cream pie in a glass!” I’ve also been frequently challenged on our assertion that our tea lattes are all fat-free, particularly with this tea.

It is simply so decadent, so wonderfully sweet and satisfying, that people cannot believe that we didn’t just liquefy a slice of coconut cream pie and serve it to them in a glass.

For the 52teas version of this tea, we are adding some honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut to our premium black tea blend along with coconut and vanilla flavors.

So, obviously, I needed to change up the recipe somewhat because the black tea that I use is different from the ones utilized by Frank. I started with my black tea base of organic Indian and Chinese teas. I did use some “honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut” as well as some vanilla beans and calendula petals.

This is very coconut-y, very creamy and oh-so-yummy! It’s been a while since I’ve had some of Frank’s version of this tea, but I’d say that I did pretty well with this blend! If my review of this tea is any indication – I think my black tea might be a bit stronger than the original version – but the other flavors are on point!

Large size is approximately 50g

organic ingredients: black teas, coconut, calendula petals, vanilla beans and natural flavors

Coconut Cream Pie from David’s Tea. . . . .

Full disclosure time, you guys.

I’ve never eaten coconut cream pie.

So before we dive into this tea review, I want you to know that I have zero frame of reference here and kiiiiiind of have no authority on the subject of which I am about to speak. Just FYI.

That said, if I were to try and imagine what coconut cream pie tastes like (creamy, coconutty, smooth, light?) I think I’d pull the exact same adjectives for this tea. It was lighter than I was anticipating, with a creamy oolong base just kind of slipping into the background. The oolong left plenty of room for the coconut and pie flavors to shine, and let’s face it– even on its brightest day, coconut isn’t exactly a wham-bam overpowering kind of flavor. The coconut is nice, if a bit weak.

The cream flavors are also nice, if a bit muted. I brewed this one nice and strong after reading some recommendations, but even then (as much as I did enjoy it), I was left wanting just a little more. An enjoyable sip, but nothing I’d reach for over and over. One bonus? Now I totally have an excuse to uh, “taste test” some real coconut cream pie to compare. Research. Dessert research. Mmmm.

Rich coconut. Creamy white chocolate. And a golden, buttery crust. Can anything top a coconut cream pie? It’s a dessert so dreamy, so fluffy, it’s like eating a deliciously retro cloud. If we had our way, we’d be snacking on coconut-filled custard 24/7. Lucky for us, this tea came along. It’s an unbelievably decadent blend of toasted coconut, white chocolate and cane sugar, all on a base of smooth-drinking oolong. The best part? It’s an all-natural blend. We’ve got pie hopes for this one…

Best served: Hot Tea

Oolong tea, white chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, milk powde r, butter oil, soy lecithin, vanilla extract), coconut, toasted coconut (coconut, sugar, dextrose, salt), cane sugar, natural coconut flavouring.

Golden West from Pacific Tea. . . . .

Golden West from Pacific Tea – I have to tell you – I wasn’t thinking I would like this fruity herbal offering – but I did!

Golden West contains apple bits, rosehip peels, hibiscus, pineapple bits with rice flour, pear slices, coconut chips, ginger, natural flavour, and marigold petals. I wasn’t thrilled when I saw hibiscus but I set that aside based on all of the other ingredients in this blend of flavors. I figured it would be sweet but I was hoping it wasn’t going to be TOO sweet. Lucky for me – it’s sweetness was JUST RIGHT.

This fruity herbal was inspired by a golden afternoon in the Solomon western province and offered the low-acid blend of pear, coconut and ginger, then topped with notes of pineapple, marigold and hibiscus.

For me – personally – the pear shined here! The pineapple and coconut paired together awesomely and was the second flavor I picked up on. Apple was the third. Both the ginger and the hibiscus were very subtle and I think that is why this worked the way it did!

It was sweet and creamy. A yin and yang of sorts. It was hydrating at the same time. And didn’t leave a FUNKY aftertaste. This was delightful both hot and cold. This makes a wonderful Fruit Infusion.

Coquito from A Quarter To Tea. . . . . .

A few weeks ago, I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts (The Sporkful, in case you’re wondering), and host Dan Pashman brought up a coconut milk eggnog drink called Coquito, popular in Puerto Rico.

The way he described this spicy, creamy, coconutty delight gave me insta-cravings, and I immediately started googling for coquito recipes to try on my own. The holiday hustle and bustle and some personal difficulties got in my way, of course, and I promptly forgot about my quest to try this delicious Puerto Rican treat.

So imagine my surprise when I opened my A Quarter to Tea subscription box for December and saw a coquito-inspired white tea sitting right on top! This tea is a delight to look at, with big chunks of dried coconut and heavenly-scented spices throughout the leaf.

Brewed, it’s a beautiful light golden liquor with strong flavors of spiced coconut with a little eggnog undertone. I loved it with a splash of milk to truly impact that creamy, eggnog-y note I was hoping for.

If this tea is anything like true coquito, I’m certain I’d be a fan! Now the real test: can I make this sample last until I finally get off my tush and try brewing up a batch for comparison?

Probably not– it’s that good.
