Smoking Coconut Black Tea from 52Teas. . . .

I loved everything about this warming tea. I loved seeing the big coconut pieces, the delicious coconut aroma, and of course the taste. As soon as I poured the boiling water over this tea, all I could smell was coconut.

I associate coconut with all things sunny and warm, so it was very soothing on a cold, grey, snowy winter day. I added a little raw sugar and a splash of coconut milk and just enjoyed the heck out of this cup. I never thought of combining any kind of tea with coconut(other than milk) but it really works out so well.

The caffeine in the black tea helped to wake up my fuzzy brain, and the aromatherapy of the coconut helped not only wake up my senses, but put me in a mellow, peaceful frame of mind which is so important. I felt like this tea was giving me a big, welcoming wake up hug. If you love coconut, this is a tea that you need to try. It’s the kind of tea that you mourn the last sip, you just want it to last forever.

I would say this is in my top three favorite new teas I tried in 2016. Actually, I would say it’s in my top two. It’s competing with another coconut tea, matcha with coconut. I guess I just love coconut!

Tea Description:  I just wanted a tea that was coconut-y and a little bit smoky. So that’s what I did.

Sometimes, that’s what my inspiration is all about. I wanted a coconut-y tea and I thought that the combination of a lightly smoky tea with the creamy, sweet coconut flavor would be really interesting.

I started with a blend of black teas – a rich, malty Assam; a smooth, medium-bodied Ceylon and a tippy, robust Yunnan. Then I added just a teensy bit of Lapsang Souchong to give it a hint of smoke. I wasn’t going for a heavily smoked tea this time around – I didn’t want an overpoweringly smoky presence – just enough smoke to add some contrast to the silky sweet coconut flavor. Then I added a bunch of huge shreds of coconut.

The result is a sublimely yummy cuppa that you’ve gotta try. Sure, it might be a little on the ‘usual’ side especially when compared to some of the teas that we’ve made in the past but it’s no less delicious. Sometimes – going with something a little more ordinary can lead to extraordinary results!

This tea is vegan, gluten-free and all organic!

TARDIS Ten – Allonsy! from Tea & Absinthe. . . .

I STILL haven’t gotten into Doctor Who…I know…I know…shame on me! But one day – not too long ago – I was feeling adventurous and decided to jump into TARDIS Ten – Allonsy! from Tea & Absinthe. Why was I being adventurous just by drinking this tea? Because of the banana, of course! Some of you already know my hate-hate relationship with bananas. I want to like them – I do – but thus far it just hasn’t happened!

I will say for an ingredient I dread so much this was a mighty fine flavored tea! Ingredients include: black tea, flavor, coconut rasps, coconut chips (coconut, coconut fat, sugar), banana bits, cornflower blossoms.

They didn’t skimp on the chunky ingredients! That scored points with me! I think with the deeper, darker black tea taste with the addition of coconut is what counteracted the banana for me – and nicely! Everything meshed well flavor-wise. I wouldn’t change the ratios at all! There was a good amount of sweetness, nuttiness, and black tea taste and I have to say I’m a fan!

This tea PROVES that just because you aren’t fond of ONE ingredient – doesn’t mean you should avoid the tea. If I did avoid it – I would be missing out on a gem of a flavored black tea and fan/themed tea! CHEERS to a tasty cuppa!

On the 9th Day of Christmas 52Teas Sent To Me. . .

I’m not going to lie, we are on the 9th Dy of this amazing promotion and I’m quiet sad! We are almost done. I’ve loved this daily special treat and it honestly did make the countdown to the holidays.

So if you are following along, scratch off your 9th Tea sticker and lets uncover the surprise!

Coconut Cream Pie Black Tea

EEEKKK!!!! I’m am so excited! I think this is a reblend that I missed the first go around so this is super exciting.  (FYI, I’m writing this review while drinking the tea). While my water is prepping I can’t keep my nose out of the pouch. This blend smells like a heavy calorie dessert that needs to be devoured instantly and that is exactly what I plan to do with this tea.

Rich creamy pudding like notes of coconut swirl the palette as a lovely rich sweetness that I think is possibly vanilla (?) that really sets this coconut based tea apart from others. I can’t put my finger on it but I also am getting a slight graham cracker like feel.

An amazing treat for sure and one that is curving this sweet tooth I’ve got.  What I almost love more than the flavor of this tea is the texture and feel you get from it. There is such a lush decadence with every sip.  This tea is one of those that you hoard like a mad fiend and are not open to sharing with anybody.

Highly recommended and if you have a chance to get your hands on some, do! You’ll be like me. . .sitting in the corner, unwillingly to share the amazing tea! It really is dessert in a cuppa at it’s finest!

Here is the official description and Mad Musings for this tea.

Coconut Cream Pie Black Tea!

Tea Description:  I was pretty excited when people asked that this tea be included in the vote for the 2016 12 Teas of Christmas, and even happier when this tea turned out to be one of the top vote getters. This has been one of the more memorable 52Teas blends for me – I love coconut! – so I was really happy to have the opportunity to reblend it.

The original description of this tea said:

Our Coconut Cream Pie flavored black tea has been one of our bestsellers here at Zoomdweebie’s since we opened. In addition to the pouches of this tea that we’ve sold, we sell a LOT of beverages made from this tea, in particular, this is probably our all time bestselling iced tea latte, one sip of which has led people to exclaim, “That’s like coconut cream pie in a glass!” I’ve also been frequently challenged on our assertion that our tea lattes are all fat-free, particularly with this tea.

It is simply so decadent, so wonderfully sweet and satisfying, that people cannot believe that we didn’t just liquefy a slice of coconut cream pie and serve it to them in a glass.

For the 52teas version of this tea, we are adding some honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut to our premium black tea blend along with coconut and vanilla flavors.

So, obviously, I needed to change up the recipe somewhat because the black tea that I use is different from the ones utilized by Frank. I started with my black tea base of organic Indian and Chinese teas. I did use some “honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut” as well as some vanilla beans and calendula petals.

This is very coconut-y, very creamy and oh-so-yummy! It’s been a while since I’ve had some of Frank’s version of this tea, but I’d say that I did pretty well with this blend! If my review of this tea is any indication – I think my black tea might be a bit stronger than the original version – but the other flavors are on point!

organic ingredients: black teas, coconut, calendula petals, vanilla beans and natural flavors.

So yummy!

As I said in the description, it’s been a long while since I’ve had some of Frank’s version of this tea. But, I have to say that I’m loving my recreation of this blend! The black tea is a good, solid black tea flavor – robust enough to get your day off to a strong start if you decided you wanted a little bit of coconut cream pie for breakfast. (Try this as a latte – seriously – it’s so darned tasty!)

The coconut is strong with this tea! It’s smooth and creamy. Sweet! I can taste that creamy custard-y filling of the coconut cream pie – and I even get an occasional note of pastry to this. The pastry is more of a distant flavor – but really, I don’t want to tweak with this and change the flavors because it’s really awesome the way it is. I don’t want to sacrifice any of the yummy coconut and custard flavors to bring out the pastry more. I guess, for me what it came down to was this question: When you eat pie, do you eat it for the crust or for the filling?

The filling wins every time! Oh sure, I want a tasty crust too, but I can’t remember eating the crust and leaving the filling of any pie – while I can remember doing the opposite as a kid!

Anyway – I’m really happy with this – I hope those of you who were fans of the original blend are just as happy with my recreation of it!

To brew: Use a rounded teaspoon of tea (give it a good shake before you measure it to redistribute any ingredients. There is vanilla bean in this blend – and they will settle to the bottom!) to 12 ounces of boiling water. Let steep for 2 1/2 minutes. Strain and cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy!

No sugar needed for this (unless you want it!) I found it plenty sweet and satisfying without! But you will want to try it as a latte because it becomes even more decadent!

Coconut Tea from CAcafe. . . .Something Different To Check Out!

Walking through Costco the other day, I stumbled upon a product that I found intriguing. CAcafe Coffee.. . .A coconut coffee powder basically.  I know that coconut is good for digestion so I thought about grabbing it but our cart was so full, I figured I’d grab it next shopping trip.

Low and behold, a week later I was chatting with a very nice representative of CAcafe about their Black Friday deals.  Next thing I know, they shipped a canister of their CAcafe Coconut Tea for me and the rest of the sisters to check out.

This tea is a little different than the rest of the tea in my stash. One- because its a powder. Besides Matcha, I really don’t have any other tea in powder form and Two- This has calories and calories from fat. But as the label notes, all fact in the coconut tea comes naturally from coconut oil, coconut meat, and coconut cream.  And lastly- this tea also has Cane Sugar in it, not something I typically have in my tea.  So yes, in 2 heaping tbsps, you have 170 calories with 100 calories coming from fat.   The ingredients in this powder are coconut cane sugar, green tea, maltodextrin, and starch.

For me, I don’t typically drink my calories so this is a departure for me. But this is such a unique and interesting product, I had to try it. I scooped the recommended 2 heaping tablespoons in my mug, prepped up hot water, and allowed the tea to cool for a moment.

Wow, I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what I would think of this beverage, but I have to say, it’s quite delicious! My initial thought after drinking this was that this would make a dynamite hot chocolate or even a great added into a matcha latte to give the beverage a touch of sweetness.

There really is a strong coconut flavor throughout so if you aren’t a coconut lover, this may not be for you. That being said, the cane sugar really provides this tea with a sweetness that I think even a child would enjoy.  The sweetness is such that this tea would absolutely curb any sweet tooth craving you might have. The one note that was very slight was the green tea flavor. I wish it was a bit stronger just to even out the coconut and sugar flavors.

All in all, I really did enjoy this powder and plan to keep it on hand for some time to come.  Rich, creamy, solid flavor and all of the powder dissolved without a hitch.  I’m excited to even add a tablespoon to my upcoming matcha lattes or smoothies. I think there is a lot of experimenting that can be done with this powdered tea and I”m excited to get started to see what kind of drinks I can create!

On the 4th Day of Christmas 52Teas Sent to Me (Spoilers)

Today is the 4th day of our countdown for the 52Teas 12 Teas of Christmas promotion.  With the winter weather we are currently experiencing, I was excited to brew up a pot of this tea to share. But first we have to find out what tea we have today.

So scratch off today’s sticker and see what today’s tea is!

Coconut Flan Genmaicha

This is  reblend from earlier in the year. I have to say that this wasn’t a favorite tea of mine when this first came out so I”m curious to see what the reblend is going to bring. So far each of the re blends have been spot on spectacular.

Brewed this tea up with the parameters provided and in no time I was greeted with a yellow-green brew to enjoy. Poured myself a cuppa and sat down to write this review. Took my first sip and. . .

Notes of creamy lush coconut roll over my palate with a roasted toasted finish and a buttery rich feel.  Each sip definitely provides a very decadent coconut flavor, so if you are a coconut fan, this tea has your name all over it!

I find that I’m liking this tea better than the original blend, but its not one of my favorites but that being said. . .  52Teas doesn’t create a bad tea. Just off of the heels of a few of the other blends, like Cranberry Soda Green Rooibos ( I completely devoured this one), this one just isn’t hit the mark for me.

I’m going to try this as a cold brew to see if the flavors pop more for me.  I have a feeling this method will really make the this blend pop!

Here is the official description of this tea and the Mad Musings behind it.  I write my reviews before reading the official tea description.

Coconut Flan Genmaicha!

Tea Description:  As I mentioned above, I was happy to see this tea win a spot into our Christmas box this year. It’s always a joyful experience to see that one of my tea creations is so well received. It’s even more exciting when the tea that’s been so well received is one of my favorite teas because that means I get to drink more of it too!

My original description of this tea went like this:

For this Cinco de Mayo, I went with a favorite dessert inspiration: Flan! I love the stuff. But I wanted something MORE than just a caramelized custard – I wanted to go coconuts! Coconut Flan! (Seriously, how yum does that sound?)

For the base, I tossed around several ideas before I settled on my organic Matcha infused Genmaicha. I thought that the Matcha together with the toasted rice would lend a really nice nutty flavor to the cup – which I felt would complement the coconut as well as that hint of caramel that Flan is famous for and the Matcha would lend a creaminess to the cup to accentuate the custard.

This is totally yum! Matcha Infused Matcha blended with huge coconut flakes and the flavors of Flan. A perfect way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

And really, I didn’t stray from the original recipe, except that I added some vanilla bean because you can never go wrong with a little more vanilla in a flan, am I right? So other than the vanilla bean, I kept true to the recipe because this is one that I was happy with when I first crafted it, so I stuck with my recipe. I hope you all enjoy it as much as you did the first time it was offered!

organic ingredients: green teas, toasted and popped rice, unsweetened coconut flakes, vanilla bean and natural flavors.

I don’t know that I really need to add additional tasting notes this time around since I did already write out a whole blog post about this tea once already. However, I do taste test each and every tea that I blend – each and every time I blend it. I put a great deal of time and energy into every tea blend I craft (including reblends and in many cases, especially reblends!) and it’s important to me that each tea tastes great when it’s sent out to my customers. I want to feel confident when I package up your orders, I want the confidence that each tea I send you is the best possible product. I don’t just blend teas and put them into pouches and slap a label on the pouch. I care too much about tea – I love tea too much to do that. I spend a lot of time taste testing the samples sent to me by vendors to ensure that the teas I use as bases are of exceptional quality. I hunt down organic ingredients to use whenever I can find them. I blend the teas and then allow ample time to cure before I taste test the tea and then if it’s not right – if I’m not satisfied – then I tweak the blend a little bit until I am happy with the product. I do all of these things before I package up the teas into pouches and put the label on it. A lot goes into each and every pouch of tea that I produce.

I’m not saying all of this to boast. I’m stating it to explain why it is that I take the time to write out these blog posts for every tea. I put forth this effort to give each tea the time it deserves in a taste test so that when I go to package it up, I’m confident of the product.

So here it is – this tea before me is one of my favorite creations from earlier this year – Coconut Flan Genmaicha. I created it for the week of Cinco De Mayo. Oh, who am I kidding. Cinco De Mayo was just a great excuse for me to create a coconut flan blend! Ha! I love flan and I love coconut and what better way to celebrate both these flavors than with a Genmaicha tea? My organic Matcha infused Genmaicha base was a perfect choice for the flavors of coconut and flan because the genmaicha offers a naturally sweet, toasty flavor that enhanced the notes of caramel to the custard. The creaminess of the Matcha brought out the creamy custard notes and the silky flavor of the coconut.

And that’s exactly what I’m tasting right now as I sip on this. Sweet, warm caramel and smooth, vanilla-y custard beneath a forward note of silken coconut. Delicious!
