Not My Momma’s Merlot / KipersLilTeaShop

Raise your pinky fingers. This tisane brews a beautiful clear, rose in color. Close to Merlot but closer to a

Rosé. The mix of berries makes for a unique medley. The flavor is close to a merlot but fights with the cacao nibs and the vanilla rooibos for dominance.

Nutty, vanilla, slightly fruity. It’s definitely not your momma’s merlot but if you are looking for a replacement this is a good second.

Here’s the scoop!

Leaf Type: Herbal
Where to Buy: Kipers Lil Tea Shop
Description:

Bold, beautiful, robust, and berry-delicious!! This tea blend really does taste like Merlot Wine (without the alcohol).

The aroma of cacao nibs and berries hits your senses first. Then the tea brews to a deep, merlot red color. The cacao nibs melt and blend with all the rosehips, hibiscus, elderberries, cranberries, and cinnamon to create this one-of-a-kind delicious tea.

Lightly tart, but mildly sweet at the same time.

Vanilla Sugar Cookie Herbal Tea/Plum Deluxe

This tea couldn’t have come at a better time. All this stormy weather makes you just want to stay at home with a cup of tea. And I don’t think I could have picked a better “comfort” tea for today.

I usually reserve spiced teas for the holidays. They can be overwhelming year round and aren’t my favorite during warmer weather. But this tea is very lightly spiced and smells amazing—like someone just pulled a tray of snickerdoodles out of the oven. (And it has me really wanting some of my mother-in-law’s snickerdoodle cookies right now!)

This is the perfect tea to brighten up a cold or rainy day. While it smells pretty spicy, the taste is very mild. Just a tiny bit of cinnamon with a vanilla flavor that takes the edge of the spice. It’s made with green rooibos and nothing containing caffeine, so it’s also a nice evening tea if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

The tea itself is lightly sweet on its own, but I added a tiny bit of orange blossom honey to my second cup. I steeped my first cup for 6 minutes and the second cup for 8 minutes. The second cup was spicier, but beyond that, there wasn’t a noticeable decline in flavor, which was nice. I was afraid the light flavors might quickly go bland, but it held up just as well!

This one should definitely go on your list of teas for a rainy day (literally and figuratively!). It’s comforting, even heartwarming, and is just the thing to brighten up an otherwise unpleasant day.

This one is inspired by our staff favorite – snickerdoodles! – we created a calming herbal tea perfect for an evening night cap or just a smooth afternoon pick me up.  We use our favorite herbal tea – green rooibos – paired with a variety of vanilla extras and a unique spice blend that comes together perfectly.  It’s just lightly sweet and lightly spiced, making for a great cookie flavored tea.

The Cake Is A Lie/Geeky Teas

“The cake is a lie” is a video game reference, specifically Portal. If you aren’t a gamer, do yourself a favor and watch someone play through and enjoy. It is a fun little game. Tell Wheatley I said hi.

There are sprinkles in the blend, which makes the morning start with a little smile, because who can resist smiling at sprinkles?

The tea is a nod to cake, and the aroma captures it pretty well. I don’t fall all over myself in astonishment shouting, “Wow, this is just like cake!” But the aromas of the vanilla and cream flavors call it to mind if you already know what they were aiming for. There is caramel flavor, which I don’t immediately associate with cake but definitely with dessert so it has that going for it, which is nice.

While eating breakfast, this was a good companion. When the food was all gone, the tea became a tad more astringent than I care for, because the black tea base has a little fruitiness on the tart side, like the way lemon tingles your tongue.

I don’t usually add milk and sugar, but for the remaining sips of this mug I added the tiniest splash of milk, which brought it back into my comfort zone. Having tried it that way, I wondered if a sprinkle of sugar would increase the cake element of the tea, but since I don’t care for sugar in my tea, it really didn’t float my Borealis.

If I had this again by itself, separate from a meal or snack, I would definitely go with a splash of milk right up front. No sugar needed for me. With food, it is sufficiently companionable as is and I expect the briskness means it is a good breakfast tea and would please those who like milk and sugar in the morning or just like brisk tea.

Of the two Geek Teas I have tried, I prefer Bad Wolf. But if you like brisk breakfast tea, this one is worth a try for you.

The Review

Unicorn Vibes is a name that induces images of limitless whimsy and flavor-filled fun. So, while I approached the tea with the giddy enthusiasm of a ten year-old with a hula hoop in one hand and a bubble wand in the other, my adult skepticism told me to quell my inner child.

As of late, most rooibos teas with exciting names seemed to overpromise and underdeliver. I tend to like my tea on the medium-strong side so I increased the steeping time to 6 minutes. The moment the infuser hit the water a light amber hue began to emerge, deepening in tone until it became a deeper peachy amber color at the final steeping time. Initially, as the tea steeped, the aroma of vanilla gave way to a vanilla-berry scent that caused me to salivate.

I had never been this excited for a rooibos in my life! My inner child was winning, she knew this was going to be good and couldn’t wait to get her hands on it. I tried the brew without any sweetener and was astonished at the natural sweetness it exuded. I then tried the tea with regular sugar and then honey. Honey overpowered the vanilla and made it cloying. White sugar made it sweeter than it needed to be but was pleasant enough.

My favorite way was definitely au naturel since I could easily see this being great as an iced tea and a starter tea for children. I couldn’t stop drinking the tea in part because the flavor was as exceptional and unique as the name it bore. Mostly, my inner child kept goading me to have a little more as memories of childhood tea parties with friends, ice cream trucks circling the block, making cupcakes doused in sprinkles and the local candy shoppe came flooding back with each sip.

Description

UNICORN VIBES is a caffeine-free magical rooibos loose leaf tea infused with vanilla berry birthday cake and rainbow sprinkle vibes. This is such a unique tea because it’s part of our “dessert tea” line. That doesn’t mean it’s super sweet; it just means it’s naturally sweet in a subtle way.

When brewed, UNICORN VIBES is a gorgeous amber color and gives off the comforting aroma of a fresh baked vanilla cake, with moments of citrus and berries.

Steep a cup or two of this dessert tea at night time or after meals to help fight sugar cravings. The creamy finish of vanilla, berries and citrus satisfies your sweet tooth and your mind will be like “That cake was delicious!” – but guess what? – with no calories. We highly recommend this tea with a splash of milk or cream for the full “cake effect”. Enjoy!

Orange Fluff/The NecessiTeas

This is one of three NecessiTeas I won in an Instagram giveaway about a year back. I was really excited to try it and yet for some reason I have not gotten around to doing so until now.

My plan was to make it hot but the package itself recommended making this iced. So I prepared it both ways, steeping both the hot and iced tea in 175F water for 3 minutes. The iced tea just got poured over ice.

The hot tea, which is not particularly hot anymore, is really quite good. The green tea was fragrant after steeping which made me worried this would taste like grass but my fear was obviously unwarranted because the flavor of the hot tea is more akin to the scent of the dry leaf, which is basically like a delicious creamsicle, except more marshmallow than vanilla. There is just so much bright and candy-like orange flavor mixed with fluffy and sweet marshmallow goodness. I personally haven’t tried an Orange Delight, the inspiration of this tea, but now I know I want to because this is delicious!

The iced tea, on the other hand, is not as much to my tastes. I find the green tea base comes out a lot more at the expense of the marshmallow flavor. Personally, I am not a fan of green tea so for me, this is a step down from the hot cup. The orange flavor still comes through strongly, but without the marshmallow it is more dull and in line with the fruit. So this iced tea is more an orange green tea and the hot tea is more Orange Fluff, a more sweet/candied flavor.

Personally I will be enjoying the rest of my 2 ozs of this tea hot because despite the company recommendations, I think that is the way to go. This is yet another successful NecessiTeas blend that I would recommend and will for sure be sharing with friends. It’s a good one, and I am especially impressed given it is almost a year old and still packs a flavor punch.
