Taster’s Review:

I was interested in this Gemini Rooibos Blend from Nina’s Paris because of the fact that it was the astrological tea for my sign.  And while I’m not sure what strawberries, vanilla and grapefruit have to do with the “twins” … I’m liking this tisane anyway.

While it’s hot, I could really taste the creamy vanilla notes.  This flavor softened as the tisane cooled, but I noticed more of the strawberry and grapefruit with the cold tisane, and I think I actually prefer this iced.

The flavor of the rooibos comes through, but it isn’t a really powerful flavor.  I taste gentle notes of nutty, woody flavors with a honeyed sweetness from the rooibos, and the nutty flavors meld well with the creamy, sweet vanilla notes.  The strawberry and grapefruit actually work quite well together, although I must admit that I would not have thought to ever combine these two fruits together.  But, like I said, they work – and they taste really quite good together.

The strawberry is sweet and it is the primary fruit note throughout the sip, with the tart notes of grapefruit arriving at the finish.  The citrus lasts long into the aftertaste, but it’s not an extraordinarily tart flavor, as its tartness has been softened by the other flavors.  Instead, it’s more like a bright, sunny citrus note that perks up the taste buds as the sip nears the finish.

A really enjoyable cuppa – this Gemini is happy with it!

Grapefruit Brown Sugar Shou Mei Blend from 52Teas

GrapefruitBrownSugarShouMeiTea Information:

Leaf Type:  White

Where to Buy:  52Teas

Tea Description:

My wife and I just celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary. I’m a little surprised she has put up with me for that long. Anyway, she specifically requested this blend and I think it was a great suggestion. It’s something I doubt I would eat, but I don’t really care for grapefruit, however as a flavored tea, this is awesome. It’s tart and sweet and light and refreshing. Very yummy.

Taster’s Review:

I was really excited to try this Grapefruit Brown Sugar Shou Mei Blend from 52Teas because I love grapefruit teas, and I’m always looking for a really good one.  I’ve found a couple of grapefruit teas that I really love, but, I’m always willing to try another to make sure I’m not missing out on one that’s better!

Since this is a white tea (a Shou Mei base) I used a lower temperature to steep it.  I generally go with 165°F when I steep a white tea, but with Shou Mei, I feel comfortable going as high as 175°F.  I’ve heard/read several different arguments of whether a higher temperature is better for a white tea, but, for me, I find that when I keep it low and steep it for 4 minutes, this provides a flavor that I enjoy.  Everyone’s palate is different, though, so I always recommend playing around with it a little, and finding the setting that works best for you.  My steeping parameters for this particular pot of tea were 175°F at 4 minutes.  And I have a really lovely cup of tea in front of me.

The aroma is definitely grapefruit-y to me.  I allow the tea to cool for about 2 minutes.  I am not sure exactly why this is, but, I have found that when I allow a couple of minutes for a tea to “set” – especially a flavored tea like this – the flavors seem to really pop.

This is actually quite tasty.  I taste the grapefruit and the brown sugar notes are not quite as distinct, it just tastes sweet.  But, I think that these sugar-y sweet notes help to tone down the tartness of the grapefruit.  I am still getting some tart notes as well as the bright, citrus-y note of grapefruit.

I like that even though this does have the brown sugar notes in it, it doesn’t taste “candied” or overly sweet.  The sweetness just seems to soften the tart notes a little.  The aftertaste is very grapefruit-ish, reminiscent of the aftertaste I’d experience if I were eating a half a grapefruit sprinkled with sugar.

The Shou Mei has a sweet, earthy taste and I like the way it melds seamlessly with the grapefruit and brown sugar notes.  Everything is very harmonious in this teacup.

The second infusion of these leaves provided more of a straightforward grapefruit note with less brown sugar notes.  I could also taste the Shou Mei more this time around.  I enjoyed both infusions.  This is a tea you should definitely resteep – both infusions taste so good!

A really pleasant grapefruit tea.  I don’t know that it’s the next great grapefruit tea in my search for great grapefruit teas, but, it is definitely tasty and one I’m happy to have in my stash.  I think I’ll brew some of this for iced tea soon, my daughter will love it!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Grapefruit Flavor Infused Green Tea from Dutch Bros. Coffee

Product Information:

DutchBros
Not our local Dutch Bros. Coffee Shop. But, it kinda looks like this.

Tea Type:  Green Iced Tea (Ready to Drink/Prepared Drink)

Where To Find:  Dutch Bros. Coffee

Taster’s Review:

OK, so my youngest daughter’s latest “thing” is the Italian sodas from Dutch Bros.  You know what I’m talking about right?  Basically, it’s like club soda that’s been infused with Torani Syrup and then generously topped with whipped cream and/or infused with a dollop of cream (both of those are optional).  As we were sitting in the drive through, waiting to place an order for her after ballet class treat, I noticed “Torani Infused Teas” on the menu and my curiosity was piqued.

So, I asked the clerk what it was and was told that they add the Torani syrup to either green or black tea.  Then he listed off the flavors of Torani syrup that they have and when he said Grapefruit, I decided I’d try a Grapefruit Flavor Infused Green Tea from Dutch Bros. Coffee.  I mean … I figured the worst that could happen is that it tastes like an overly sweet tea much like the ready to drink teas that you get at the corner convenience store.

My first sip of the beverage – yep, that’s what it is.  It’s a very sweet tea with more grapefruit flavor than tea flavor and an abundance of sugary sweetness that overpowers the tea notes to oblivion.  This drink … well, it was … alright.  Drinkable.  Something that I’d be able to finish but not something for which I’d want to return to Dutch Bros.

But then something impressive happened.  My husband told the clerk that I’m a tea snob and very picky about my tea.  When the clerk asked me how I liked the tea, I said, “It’s drinkable.”  My husband translated this to the clerk to say, “That’s a compliment from her.”

Ha!  My husband fancies himself a comedian.  I’ve tried to explain to him that just because our pre-teen daughter and her friends find him entertaining does not mean that he could make a living as a stand-up comic.

When I say drinkable, basically, what I mean is that this tastes alright, but it’s too sweet and it’s not something I’d buy again.  I can drink it but would I call it tea?  No.

Upon hearing that the infused tea drink was merely “drinkable,” the clerk takes back the drink and explains that their drinks are 100% satisfaction guaranteed.  Then he made me a new Grapefruit Flavor Infused Tea, this time, using half the syrup that was used the first time around.

This time, it’s actually quite enjoyable.  Not just drinkable, but something that put a smile on my face.  I have a mildly sweet drink where I’m able to taste both the grapefruit and the green tea.  The grapefruit reminds me of the flavor of a Texas pink grapefruit (my favorite).  It doesn’t taste like a candified (yes it’s a word, I just made it up) version of grapefruit.  It tastes like the Texas pink grapefruit that I cut in half and lightly sprinkled with a little sugar to contrast with the tart bitterness of the fruit.  It tastes … yummy!

And I can taste the green tea this time around (the first cup that was made for me, I could not taste green tea).  It tastes light and crisp, with a refreshing hint of vegetative flavor.  Slightly grassy.  It marries nicely with the notes of grapefruit, and there is a pleasing balance between the components of this beverage.

Overall, this was a really tasty tea.  Bravo to the clerk at Dutch Bros. for taking a little extra time to make my drink just right for me.  I appreciate this kind of customer service, and this tea exceeds what I’d find at the “average” coffee stop.

Taster’s Review:

I am revisiting a tea that I’ve previously reviewed this evening, mostly because it’s been ages since that previous review published, and when I sat down with this Saint Isaac’s Blend Black Tea from Upton Tea Imports, I felt like writing about it.  It’s one of my favorites from Upton.

And really, there’s nothing wrong with revisiting a tea, is there?  One of the first lessons I learned when I began my tea journey many years ago (more years than you need to know!) I learned that every tea tastes different to every palate, and I think that it should follow that every tea would offer potential to be at least a little different each time you taste it.

This tea has a very pleasant black tea base that is strong and solid, like a robust drapery of flavor.  It is rich with hints of smoke – and I like that the smoke here is delicate.  I’ve tasted at least a couple of “smoky” Earl Grey blends, and of those that I’ve tried and come to memory, I will say that this one offers the softest smoky taste.  There is a slight “malty” note to this as well as a chocolate-y type of flavor from the black tea.   I notice less astringency with this cup than I seemed to indicate on my previous tasting note.

As the tea cools slightly, the citrus notes of the tea begin to POP.  The grapefruit, in particular, is noteworthy.  The bergamot seems a little less apparent than the grapefruit.  Imagine, if you would, two friends at the party:  one friend is sort of out there and really capturing everyone’s attention.  The other friend is right by the party animal’s side, not making as much noise but is still within the focus of everyone at the party.  With this tea, the grapefruit is the party animal, while the bergamot is the party animal’s best friend.

A really enjoyable tea – as I said before, it’s one of my favorites from Upton Tea Imports – because it’s an unusual tea with a captivating complexity.  Definitely one you should try!

Juicy Lemon & Pink Grapefruit Oolong Tea from Herbal Infusions

lemon_grapefruit_oolongTea Information:

Leaf Type:  Oolong

Where to Buy:  Herbal Infusions

Tea Description:

At first we started off this blend of Formosa Oolong with just lemon, but soon Dan decided that his love of grapefruit (pink specifically) should be shared in this tea. We then added freshly peeled organic pink grapefruit rind and created a fantastically balanced and refreshing Oolong tea that we are sure you’ll love.

Taster’s Review:

The name of this Oolong:  Juicy Lemon & Pink Grapefruit Oolong Tea from Herbal Infusions … suggests that it’s going to be quite a tart tasting tea.  So, I’m not exactly sure why it was that I had to order some as soon as I discovered it.  I’m not usually a big fan of tart flavors, although I do like lemon and I love grapefruit teas if they’re done correctly.  And I think that was the allure for me, my love of grapefruit teas and still looking for the best grapefruit tea out there.

This is really good.  Surprisingly, it’s not as tart as the name suggests.  Sure, the lemon is there, and so is the grapefruit, but the flavors balance out with the sweet notes of the Oolong in such a way that I taste more of the sweeter notes of the two citrus fruits than I do the tarty flavors.

The Oolong has a toasty note to it, and there is a slightly earthy/nutty flavor to it as well.  I really enjoy the contrast between the earthiness and warm nutty flavors to the bright, citrus-y notes of the fruit flavors.

A really enjoyable flavored Oolong.  The natural flavors of the dark Oolong tea meld in a very agreeable way with the fruit flavors of lemon and grapefruit.  I’m really glad I tried it!  Oh!  And be sure to resteep the leaves with this one.  The second infusion is even better than the first.
