I received a packet of this instant chai mix in my January Love with Food box.

Taster’s Review:

In addition to my tea addiction … I also consider myself a bit of a foodie, and I enjoy receiving a couple of “food tasting boxes” every month.  I subscribe to a couple of them, including Love with Food.  Love with Food is a great company that every month, sends out boxes that are filled with little samples of food items.  And for every box sent, Love with Food donates a meal to a hungry child.  I like that.

In January, I received a package of this Tiger Spice Chai Mix from David Rio. Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve tried the Tiger Spice Chai Mix from David Rio … I had the opportunity to try their products years ago, after being introduced to them through a hot beverage convention that I attended back when I was still self-employed as a tea vendor.  I enjoyed it back then, and I’m enjoying it now.

It has a creamy, sweet-spiced taste. It is … in my opinion, too sweet.  I’d rather be able to sweeten it myself than to have all that sugar added to my chai, but, as a once in a while treat for myself, I think I can handle the occasional sweet drink.  And since this is the first time I’ve had this chai in … probably six or seven years, I’d say that’s once in quite a while!

And since that last time that I tried this chai … I can say that my taste buds have really come a long way.  I used to really LOVE this stuff.  It’s still … OK … but, it’s not all that I thought it once was.  The black tea is quite obscured by the sugar and the creamer used in the mix.  The spices are not very spicy … they’re pretty mellow in comparison to other chai blends I’ve had recently, and a bit more mellow than I would like it to be.

It’s drinkable, certainly, but not something that I would want to drink on a regular basis, and as it is pumped up with a lot of sugar and corn syrup solids, it’s probably better that way.  I enjoyed it, but, certainly not as much as I would have enjoyed a chai that I had more control over – that I could decide how much sweetener (if any) I would add, and how much milk/cream/creamer I would add, if any.

That said, I think it’s commendable that David Rio is committed to Animal Welfare.  You can read more about that here.

Taster’s Review:

I was thrilled when I found this Mint Masala Chai from Blue Lotus Chai (as well as their other varieties) available at my local Chuck’s Produce Market!    I just love Blue Lotus Chai!

And this Mint Masala Chai is awesome.  It tastes very much like the Original Masala Chai, but with a big burst of refreshing mint flavor!  The mint adds such a nice dimension of flavor – it’s so cool and crisp and invigorating!

I prepared this according to package directions, using 4 ounces of freshly boiled water, 4 ounces of milk, and a heaping scoop (the bamboo scoop that is included with the package of chai is just the right size!) of powdered chai.  Remembering last time that I like this to be a little spicier, I added another half a scoop, and this produces the perfect cup of chai for me.

The mint adds a nice sweetness to the cup, so no additional sweetener is needed, but, I did find that if I added a little less than half a teaspoon of turbinado sugar, this brought out the spices a little more, and when I drink chai, it’s usually all about the spice for me!  But I love that Blue Lotus Chai lets you decide whether or not to add sweetener rather than going ahead and adding it to the mix.  I find that too often with these types of chai mixes, the sugar is just too overwhelming … I like that I control the amount of sweetener I put in … not to mention that I can control whether I add milk and how much strong I want the chai to be!

The smooth flavor of black tea hits the palate first, and then the spices come on strong!  I taste pepper and ginger almost immediately, and these flavors linger, but they aren’t so strong that I need to search for the other spices.  I taste cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and the delicious taste of nutmeg too.  I love that Blue Lotus Chai includes nutmeg in their chai blends!

And then the mint comes forward and it is so fresh tasting – ZESTY!  I love the way the mint adds such a cool, bright flavor to the cup.  It’s a really nice change from the usual chai blends!

Even if you can’t find Blue Lotus Chai in your local retail store, if you like chai … YOU’VE got to try this! I highly recommend visiting their online store and getting yourself some of this amazing chai – you won’t regret it!

Taster’s Review:

I always find myself slightly cringing at the thought of trying these teas from Green Tea HP.  And, the fact of the matter is, the cringe is unfounded, because every single one of the products that I’ve tried from Green Tea HP has tasted really good!

These are instant tea powders that come in little “pixies,” and they mix up quick and easy into a glass of water (filtered please!) … OR for the individual on the go, just pour the pixie into a bottle of water and shake it up.  It dissolves instantly, and there’s no undissolved sediment at the bottom of the glass … it all gets evenly incorporated.

This Muscle Pump has a sweet, berry-like taste that tastes a bit more like a berry punch than it does a tea.  And I think that this is where I think I tend to “cringe.”  It’s because it doesn’t really taste a whole lot like tea.  It tastes more like an energy drink or one of those drinks you mix from a powder (think Crystal Light), and part of me worries that it might be sweetened with aspartame – and I’m really REALLY allergic to aspartame.  But, it isn’t sweetened with sugar OR aspartame and it is diabetic friendly.  I’m not a diabetic, but, when it comes to sugar I like to control how much I put into my body and I like that this doesn’t have any sugar in it.  And I really appreciate that there is no aspartame!

And even though it doesn’t taste a whole lot like green tea (I’ve said before that these are more geared toward those who don’t drink a lot of green tea but want to enjoy the health benefits of green tea), I still enjoy the flavor.  It is sweet and pleasant, and I think of all the different Green Tea HP flavors I’ve tried thus far, this one might be my favorite.  And to think I was so afraid to try it!  I’m liking this!

And I now feel like I have enough energy to go and clean the kitchen floor!
