Taster’s Review:

Nuvola Tea brings us a very light delicate golden hued pouchong from Taiwan. The broth of this tea is thick and when I pull my steeping basket from my cup it looks like a thin light honey dripping elegantly downward back into my cup. It is quite pretty.

The aroma of the tea is beautifully floral mixed with the aroma of sugar cane.

My first steep was quite light, and I could detect the delicate floral notes, sugar notes, and the pouchong leaf itself which is delicious! However, the first steep is in fact quite light in color and taste. I could have poured this steep and considered it a rinse but it was too good to pour even though I prefer a heavier flavor in my tea. I continued to enjoy it appreciating the tea for its subtle but sweet nuances.

My second steep was more to my liking and more “robust” although this is far from a robust tea. Now admittedly I am one who likes robust flavors in my tea, and truth be told this tea has more than enough flavor and is really profound in what it offers so I do not want to minimize the depth of flavor this tea offers!

The mouth feel is heavy, creamy, broth-y, and full. There is a buttery and noticeable vegetal note dancing on my taste buds! The after taste is lingering mostly of the floral notes.

I realize that the description says “Orchid” however having little experience with orchid here in Kansas, where I live, I am detecting what I would identify or at least have a connection to, as honeysuckle. Which makes me wonder if the two flowers are somewhat similar perhaps. Regardless, I love the floral note in this tea.

I have to make a confession, when I saw how light this tea steeped up I was skeptical. I now find that I am falling in love with this tea. Between the sugary, honey dew, floral, green, and even fresh lively taste in this cup, I am imagining this being the type of tea you could enjoy in a tender romantic moment. Yet, at the same time this tea is also fitting for a luncheon with your grandmother, sister, or a group of friends. It makes me think of those quite contemplative moments as well. Perhaps another tea to add to my “meditative” tea list! I find this tea very grounding and centering. Yes, I am falling for this tea.

There is a drying sensation at the back of the throat between sips if you wait too long. That is alright, although not a favorite aspect in tea in my opinion. Although as long as I have another sip in my cup, there is nothing to worry about! As soon as I typed that however I realized its just about time for steep three. Which I am sure I will enjoy as the leaves still appear as they have much more to give, more imagery for me to contemplate.

Yes, Nuvola, you do offer a fine tea here. I look forward to trying more of your offerings!

Taster’s Review:

Wow!  Just wow!  This is a white tea?

When someone says “white tea,” thoughts of a pale, delicately flavored tea come to mind.  Even now, even after all the tea that I’ve tried, even after trying some intensely flavored, pure white teas … the majority of the white teas tend to have a very “light” overall characteristic, and therefore evoke the thoughts of a very soft taste.

But this white tea simply shatters those thoughts immediately, with the very first sip.  Yes, it does have a delicate quality to it, but, that certainly isn’t the first thing that comes to my attention.  I first note a sharp floral note that tells me exactly why this tea is called “White Orchid.”  This flowery note is not at all delicate!  It is there … and it is quite bold.

It isn’t until the tea cools just slightly that the delicate qualities of this tea come into focus.  Beneath the bold flavor of the orchid (which, I guess it could be argued is a rather delicate flower and perhaps the term delicate applies), there is a light, crisp note.  Here is where the real “delicate” quality that I mentioned previously comes in.  The flavor goes from a very powerful floral note to a much softer set of flavors … and while the presentation is on the delicate side, it is incredibly complex.  I taste layers of fruit (white grape, hints of peach, and even a honey-like tone that evokes thoughts of Honeycrisp apples), whispers of an airy quality, and sweet notes of vegetation.

This is one of the most amazing white teas I’ve yet to taste.  It is deliciously sweet, floral and possesses such an intriguing complexity.  It is refreshingly full-flavored.  This is a white tea for those who seek to challenge their previous thoughts about white tea.  This is unlike any white tea I’ve tried before, and I love it!

Taiwanese Orchid Oolong from Verdant Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Oolong

Where to Buy:  Verdant Tea

Product Description:

The raw material for this scented tea comes from Dong Ding, the most famous of the tea growing regions of Taiwan. The leaves are allowed to sit with orchid flowers as they dry, absorbing the floral aroma. They are then hand-rolled and finished. The tea builds over each sip to a strong, almost candy-like quality with the creamy floral quality of any great green oolong.

Taster’s Review:

I’m going to start this review with a story… and for a few minutes here, you’re probably going to wonder what my story has to do with this tea.  But, bear with me, there is a connection…

After my father married my stepmother, my life was pretty sad.  The only real happy moments that I can remember at that point in my life was when my father and stepmother took their annual vacation, and me and my stepsister spent two weeks with my beloved Gramma.  (Really, there was no place I’d rather be than at Gramma’s back then.)

During those two weeks, my stepsister and I got to spend one day at Disneyland, and one day at Knott’s Berry Farm.  And those were the best times at these amusement parks, because we didn’t have my younger stepbrothers with us, and we didn’t have boring parents tagging along.  We pretty much had the park to ourselves.

And my favorite place to hang out at Disneyland?  This may come as a surprise, but, it wasn’t a favorite ride – although I did love the rides, don’t get me wrong – but I loved the penny arcade and right next door to the penny arcade was the old-fashioned candy store:  Candy Palace.  They had “real” candy there, made the old-fashioned way with real sugar and real flavor.

And here is where this tea comes into this story.  The sweetness of this tea… reminds me of the sweetness of the candy from that old-fashioned candy shop.  It’s positively LOVELY.  It has that real sugar kind of sweetness, like the rock sugar candy that I used to adore, and maybe a hint of that old-fashioned licorice.

But there is so much more to this tea.  I’ve tried a few orchid Oolong teas, and I’ve enjoyed them, but not one of them has come this close to the honest-to-goodness orchid flavor that this tea possesses.  It is sublime!

It is smooth and rich too, with a soft mouthfeel that holds on to that sweetness and orchid flavor so that these essences can be enjoyed long into the aftertaste. When I inhale air over the palate after I’ve taken a sip, I can taste the licorice notes I mentioned earlier, but this time it’s strong and sweet with a hint of spice.  It’s rather bracing and unexpected.

Truly an incredible tea experience.  A must try for Oolong enthusiasts!

Taster’s Review:

I bought this tea some time ago, and it had been inadvertently stashed away with some other teas before I had a chance to try it.  I guess I can look at this as a shame that in my carelessness I’ve not tried this earlier, but, I prefer to look at it as I found a hidden treasure!

And what a treasure it is!  The thick texture of this tea reminds me of a delicious Chinese Hot and Sour soup.  And while this tea does not possess “hot-spicy” notes like that soup would, it does have a savory sour note that arrives at mid-sip.  Delicious!

The aroma is mesmerizing!  It smells deeply floral with beautiful sweet and savory tones to it.  So amazing.

This tea is aptly named.  It is sweet like honey, with a beautiful orchid-like overtone.  It has a lovely complexity to it.  A fruit-like flavor that is both sweet and sour.  This is a delight to sip, and the leaves render many delicious infusions.

This is a fantastic Oolong tea.  While this tea is no longer available on JK Tea Shop’s website, I urge you to visit the website for 2010’s Honey Orchid Oolong, and be sure to visit often to watch for this year’s Honey Orchid Oolong offerings.  You’ll be glad you did!

Honey Orchid Black Tea from Golden Moon Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy: Golden Moon Tea

Product Description:

One of the best teas we have tasted. It is so rare that it is actually its own varietal without any flavorings or scenting. The honey flavor literally explodes on your front palate with a subtle finish of fresh orchids.

Taster’s Review:

I feel very honored to be able to try this tea from Golden Moon Tea.  It is one of the exclusive rare teas offered to the Single Leaf Club and after having sampled this, I am planning on joining the club so that I can enjoy other great teas such as this!  This is phenomenal!

The flavor is so amazing.  Just as the description suggests, there is a strong “explosion” of honey flavor as well as a floral finish.  I also taste an undercurrent of savory cocoa notes which adds such a luxuriousness to this experience.  This tea has a strong presence – with a toothsome, biscuit-y type quality to it.  One of the best teas I’ve ever had the opportunity to taste – ever!

I absolutely love this tea.  If I were forced to choose just one black tea that I could drink for the rest of my life, I would most likely choose this one, and I would be quite content with that choice.  Yes, it’s that good.

In fact, this tea is so amazing that it has left me at a loss for words, because I really don’t know what else to add here – this is a tea for true tea connoisseurs.  I highly recommend joining the Single Leaf Club so that you might experience this tea for yourself.  I have not tried any other teas from the Single Leaf Club – but I think that this tea alone is worth the membership!  Trust me, you won’t be disappointed by this one!
