Summer Solstice Herbal Tea from Tealux

SummerSolsticeTea Information:

Leaf Type:  Fruit/Herbal Tisane

Where to Buy:  Tealux

Tea Description:

Summer solstice is the name for the mythical night of the 21st of June ‘ the shortest night of the year. Midsummer is often described as a pause in-between a change in nature and provides us with the opportunity to pause for a moment in order to align ourselves with the energy changes of the natural forces. We have united the taste of ripe sun fruits and fresh herbs with the Swedish midsummer tradition of blossoms, in order to keep the rays of sun a little while longer in your cup.

Taster’s Review:

It’s not quite the Summer Solstice yet, but the weather is definitely getting warmer! Perhaps that’s why this particular blend really spoke to me today. It’s hard to tell from the description exactly what you’re going to get, so I jumped right in and brewed up a cup. The first thing of note is the size of the fruit pieces contained in this blend. There are whole raspberries, generous slices of freeze-dried strawberry, and large pieces of apple, pineapple and papaya (about 1 inch square.) There are smaller pieces of hibiscus, small flakes of nettle leaves, and a scattering of sunflower blossoms. The blend as a whole is bright and colourful – very summery-looking. It smells quite rich and fruity, rather in the manner of fruit cake.

I used approximately 2 tsp of leaf, and gave it 4 minutes in boiling water. It’s by no means easy to measure, due to the large leaf size, but I did my best! The resulting liquor is golden brown, and the scent is mildly fruity – I’m picking up blackberry and coconut primarily.

To taste, the raspberry and strawberry are a lot more prominent than I thought they might be. They’re juicy and natural-tasting, sweet initially and then a little tart. The more “tropical” flavours develop in the mid-sip; a lot of coconut, a hint of pineapple, and a slight pepperiness from the papaya. It’s a slightly odd combination, like two halves of two different teas have been unexpectedly brought together. It’s not unpleasant, but the transition from summer berries to tropical fruit is a little jarring. The fruit flavours linger well into the aftertaste, and I can detect a splash of blackberry at this point. It’s tart and a little sour, but again incredibly juicy, and I could see this working well with the initial strawberry/raspberry combination. Somehow, though, it’s not quite what I wanted after the tropical explosion that preceded it.

I quite like this one, purely for it’s accurate fruit flavours and sheer juciness. It’s a great thirst quencher on a warm day. I would have preferred it to be either berry or tropical, though, rather than both. The two flavour sets aren’t a brilliant match to begin with, and nothing is gained when they have to compete with each other for dominance. Still, it’s a pleasing cup on the whole, and I can imagine it working well iced in the warmer months to come.

Pineapple Sencha from Den’s Tea

Pineapple-SenchaTea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

This tea is available from Amoda Tea.

Tea Description:

Loved by anyone who tries it, this tea is a must-try. There is a perfect balance between the fresh, grassy taste of a Sencha (a Japanese green tea) and the sweet tropical pineapple. Very natural & authentic fruit flavour and a buttery creaminess make this tea an example of how flavoured tea should taste! Great as a cold-steeped tea.

Taster’s Review:

I was really excited to find Pineapple Sencha from Den’s Tea in the March box from Amoda Tea!  It’s a tea that I’ve been hearing so many positive things about on Steepster and one that I’ve had on my mental list of teas to try but one that I’ve not yet gotten around to ordering for myself.  So, I’m really happy to have this opportunity now to try it.

The dry leaf looks very much like what the picture above depicts – it’s bright, jade green Japanese Sencha tea leaves with bits of dried pineapple.  Some of the pieces of pineapple look a little darker – almost orange – and it almost looks like maybe that could be papaya or mango instead of pineapple.  The ingredients list only Sencha, pineapple pieces and flavoring, so maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me.

But rather than actually sampling a piece of the fruit, I just poured the contents of the packet into the basket of my Breville One-Touch tea maker and added 500 ml of water to the jug and set the parameters:  170°F and 1 1/2 minutes.

This produced a very light tasting cup of tea – subtle but lovely!  The pineapple is a prominent flavor but I can also taste the light, fresh notes of the Japanese Sencha:  slightly grassy and with a hint of butter.  There is a nice sweet and savory contrast going on between the two profiles.

And because this is a Japanese Sencha, you know I went in for a second infusion!

The second infusion is even stronger in flavor than the first was.  The first was somewhat delicate and with this second infusion, the flavors have developed.  The pineapple is well-defined.  Sweet, juicy and very true to the fruit.  There is no mistaking that this is pineapple!  It doesn’t taste candied or artificial.  It tastes bright!  It tastes like fresh, delicious pineapple!  YUM!

The Japanese Sencha adds a compelling contrast to the sweet pineapple notes.  The Sencha adds a little bit of savory to the cup, balancing out the sweetness.  It also offers a slightly creamy texture to the cup which is quite pleasant.

Overall, a spectacular tea – one I’m really happy that Amoda Tea chose for this month’s box!  Thank you, Amoda!

Taster’s Review:

Really nice!  This Pineapple Upside-down Cake Iced Green Tea from Southern Boy Teas is a really tasty treat!

I love that I can taste all the flavors:  I taste a buttery cake, I taste sweet pineapple, brown sugar and just a touch of maraschino cherry.  And I taste the smooth green tea.  It’s light, fresh and buttery, and those buttery notes meld really nicely with the buttery notes of the cake.

You’d think that with so many different flavors going on that you wouldn’t be able to discern one flavor from another.  And I have to admit that at first, I couldn’t.  My first glass – I was tasting kind of a muddled mess of flavors that were sweet and there was certainly a refreshingly tasty element to it but it was difficult to say – “oh, I taste the pineapple” or “I taste the buttery cake-like flavors” or “I can taste the green tea!”

But now that I’ve finished that first glass and am working on the second one, the flavors have come forward and have distinguished themselves on my palate.

I like that this is sweet but not so sweet that I’m overwhelmed by the sweet notes.  It’s sweet and maybe even a tad ‘dessert-y’ but it’s still refreshing enough to guzzle down when you need to quench that thirst.

Quite yummy!

Taster’s Review:

The dry leaf of this Focus Green Tea from NudiTea is extraordinarily fragrant!  It smells amazing!  Like wow, can I get this scent in a bar of soap or perhaps a wax tart that you melt to make the whole room smell like that!  It’s strongly floral without smelling like a flower shop, because there are lovely notes of pineapple that balance the flowery notes.  Lovely!

The brewed tea has a softer aroma but otherwise smells quite similar – beautiful floral notes with notes of pineapple.

To brew this tea, I used my Breville One-Touch.  I measured two bamboo scoops of the loose leaf tea into the basket of the tea maker, and 500ml of freshly filtered water into the kettle.  Then I set the parameters:  175°F for 2 minutes.

It’s a really tasty blend!  The green tea is sweet and has a nice creamy texture to it.  I like that the texture is light but there is a soft creamy feel to it.  It doesn’t taste sharp or bitter, it’s sweet, lightly buttery with some grassy notes.

I taste passion fruit.  The way the description is worded, it seems that it’s passion fruit flowers … but I’m tasting passion fruit.  Sweet, luscious passion fruit!  Yum!  I also get a hint of pineapple from this.  Just a hint.

As far as the floral notes go, I taste the sweetness of the rose and mallow flowers, and I taste the sharp sunflower notes.

The fruit and the floral notes are pretty evenly paired – neither is really stronger than the other.  The fruit is sweet and with just a whisper of tangy flavor while the floral notes add a hint of exotic flavor to it and a touch of distinct flower sweetness.

Overall, this is a pleasant cuppa – it’s sweet but not in a cloying way.  It’s got a nice layered flavor:  layers of flower are the top notes with the middle notes of juicy passion fruit and the undertone of Sencha.

My one criticism – if you want to call it that – would be the addition of the chamomile to this blend.  Why chamomile?  Chamomile tends to be a relaxing herb, not one that I associate with being focused and alert.  I don’t really taste a lot of chamomile in this, maybe once in a while I might pick up on a honey-like flavor that’s quite chamomile-ish but it still is an ‘odd’ ingredient in a tea that is to support a sense of “Focus.”

Lime Gelatin Salad Iced Green Tea from Southern Boy Teas

Leaf Type:  Green

Tea Description:

Grandma’s Jello!

Okay, but seriously, This is a tea that combines all of the goodness of lime gelatin, pineapple and marshmallow without forcing you to stare down the quivering mass that looks like something from outer space. When these flavors combine with our sweet, buttery Chinese sencha fannings, well, trust me, this is a tea that will blow you away.

Taster’s Review:

Mmm!  Lime Jello was one of my all time favorite teas from 52Teas, and I loved Southern Boy Teas’ black tea version of the Lime Jello too.  So, I felt very confident that I’d love this Lime Gelatin Salad Iced Green Tea from Southern Boy Teas too.

And it is YUMMY!  I have to admit that it isn’t quite as tasty as I remember the original Lime Jello tasting.  It’s still really good though.  Very refreshing.  The flavors are delightful with bright notes of lime that’s sweet with just enough tart to keep it from tasting too sweet.

I also taste a little bit of marshmallow in there.  The pineapple is a little more difficult to pick out.  It doesn’t just jump right out and say “hello, I’m pineapple.”  But you taste something a little different, something that’s fruity but not quite lime and after a while, my taste buds start to recognize it as pineapple.

This is a really enjoyable iced tea.  I like that it’s sweet without adding anything to it – you don’t need to add sugar or other sweetener to this tea.  It’s really enjoyable as it is.

And what I really LOVE about the green teas (and white teas) from SBT is that you can resteep the bag with no loss in flavor.  Actually, I find that the second pitcher is even tastier than the first!
