Taster’s Review:

While this 2012 Douji “Hong Shang Dou” Raw Puerh Tea Cake from China Cha Dao no longer appears available on the vendor’s website, the 2011 and 2013 examples of this tea are currently available … hopefully my review of this tea might help you make a decision about it!

This tea brewed up surprisingly light in color because I generally expect a dark color from a Pu-erh, but, then I had to remind myself that not all Pu-erh are alike!  Case and point IS this Pu-erh, not just because of it’s color, but because of the flavor.

The aroma is more vegetative than it is earthy, and the flavor is reflective of that.  It does have a slightly earthy taste, but, for those of you out there that tend to shy away from Pu-erh because of it’s strong earthy character, this tea will be more to your liking, I think.

My first cup is sweet and smooth and very mellow.  There is virtually no astringency and absolutely no bitterness.  It is just … SMOOTH.  The texture is that of a light broth:  very soft and comforting.  It is a relaxing cup.

My second cup delivered a more intense flavor.  This cup is slightly more earthy than the first was, but the earthiness is not the usual earthiness that I associate with a Pu-erh.  This is more like a vegetative earthiness.  Warm yet crisp.  Sweet, but a little less sweet than the first cup, this is still a very mellow and smooth drink.

My third and fourth cups of this Pu-erh developed a more savory kind of taste to them:  earthy, vegetative, and almost salty.  There is more astringency at this point than in the first two cups, but, still it’s a very small amount.  Each cup becomes a little less smooth, but more complex.  It’s as though the softness lifts to reveal the layers of flavor.

Overall, a very pleasant Pu-erh experience!

Taster’s Review:

I received this chocolate bar in my April Knoshbox (yes, it has been a while, I tend to horde my gourmet chocolates for times when I really need chocolate.  Like now!) and because this Virgin Chocolate Bar from Raaka Chocolate is also made with vanilla rooibos, I thought that I’d offer a product review on this confection right here on SororiTea Sisters, rather than my foodie blog.

The first thing I noticed about this is the packaging … I love the zentangle-ish wrapper!  Very cool!  The chocolate itself is a dark chocolate and it has a crisp “snap” to it when I break the bar.

Now, I’ve got to say that I’m not as fond of raw chocolate as I am of the “roasted” chocolate.  The roasting of the cacao beans seems to add a depth to the chocolate that I just don’t experience in the raw chocolate.  But that’s not to say I dislike the raw chocolate, I just prefer it to be made from roasted cacao.  Here the chocolate is dark (67%) and it has a bold, rich flavor that is both bitter and sweet.

I can taste the rooibos, and the rooibos offers a slightly fruity tone to the chocolate.  The tasting notes on the Raaka website suggest a “cherry” flavor, and I don’t know if I’m getting cherry, exactly.  I definitely taste the vanilla, and it enhances the overall “creaminess” to the bar, which I really like.  I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate, but, there is something to that creaminess of a milk chocolate bar that I do enjoy, and the vanilla notes here add that element without the milk.

When I allow the chocolate to melt over my palate, I notice more of the aforementioned cherry notes, as well as the toasted marshmallow notes as described on the website, so, I highly recommend savoring this bar like this:  breaking the bar into small, bite-size bits, and then putting the small piece on your tongue and allowing the warmth of your mouth to soften the chocolate.  That’s when you’ll really enjoy the fullness of flavor from this chocolate bar.

Overall, a really delightful chocolate experience.  Then again, when is chocolate NOT a delightful experience?  If you’re looking for a good raw chocolate bar … I think that this one from Raaka is my favorite of the raw chocolate bars that I’ve tasted thus far.

Witch’s Broom Raw Puerh Tea (2001) from New Mexico Tea Co.

Taster’s Review:

I ordered this 2001 Witch’s Broom Raw Puerh Tea with my last order from New Mexico Tea Company, mostly because I found the tea’s appearance to be so intriguing!  It really does look like the bristles of a witch’s broom!

With the leaves on the darker side, I was surprised at the color of the liquid produced when I brewed the leaves.  And, I’m used to Pu-erh teas producing a rather dark liquor, but, this is quite pale.  But … the flavor is LOVELY!

I decided to take this tea through its paces and go for at least six infusions.  However, because of the size of the leaves, I couldn’t fit them in my gaiwan without breaking them … and I just couldn’t bring myself to doing that!  So, I brewed them in a larger vessel (my Smart Tea Maker did the job very nicely).

The first infusion (following a quick 15 second rinse) delivered just what I was promised with the above description from New Mexico Tea Company … a sweet, light taste with notes of fruit.  I don’t know that I taste peaches or plums just yet, but, there is definite sweet fruit notes here.  There are notes of earth, but I’m pleased to report that the earthy tones are subdued and off in the background.

With each subsequent infusion, this tea became sweeter and sweeter.  By the third infusion, I began to pick up on more of the fruity notes that were promised in the description … I can definitely taste stone fruit … a sweet plum and hints of peach.  Amazing!

By the time I reached my fourth infusion, I was really delighted with how sweet this tea had become.  It’s so sweet and mellow and the fruity notes evoke thoughts of a thinned fruit nectar.  Very nice, indeed.

I stopped at six infusions … not because the tea was ready to quit on me, but because it was time to go to bed!  This is truly an amazing Pu-erh.  I highly recommend it to those looking for a unique Pu-erh that is less earthy and more sweet and fruit-like!

Xocolatl From Bird’s Eye Tea

All it takes is a little honey or agave added to the brewed tea to create a healthy treat for yourself. Calming chamomile and mints in the blend help relax and calm the nervous system while the chocolate gives its characteristic energy kick and mood boost. Rose petals were added to bring out the subtle floral character in chocolate. Chipotle powder increases circulation and adds a slight smokiness to the overall tea flavor. Cinnamon, ginger, and star anise add a dessert like quality, but also support healthy immune function.

Taster’s Review:

Recently, the SororiTea Sisters were introduced to a new tea company that is LOCAL for me – well, kind of local (the same state, anyway!) and I was so excited to learn about them!  The company:  Bird’s Eye Tea!

They are a subscription tea service – which means that for just $22. every month, they send a box with several different selections of teas in it.  This Xocolatl is from the October box, and it is a yummy blend of raw cacao powder, chamomile, rose, mint, cinnamon, ginger, star anise, chipotle powder and roasted cacao nibs.  I know, it sounds amazing, right?

Because the ingredients are so different from any other tisane that I can remember drinking, and because it LOOKS so different too, I followed the directions precisely … I even got out a measuring cup and spoon!  I measured 3/4 cup of hot water to steep with 2 teaspoons of the tisane, and I steeped it for 10 minutes.  Meanwhile, I heated 3/4 cup of milk, and I added the steeped liquid to the warm milk and I frothed it a bit with my handheld frothing tool.  I did add a little bit of turbinado sugar to the cup just to enhance the spices, and it created the most delightful tasting cup of Xocolatl!

Oh, my… I have GOT to get some more of this!  This is amazing.  This tastes so much like the hot chocolate that my Latina friends would serve in their homes!  Sweet and chocolate-y, but with just the right amount of warm spice.  The rose offers hints of flavor and an interesting dimension to the overall cup.  It isn’t too spicy, and it is a gently comforting heat rather than an invigorating spicy-hot taste.  Every one of the ingredients is represented in the flavor, but at the same time, they all come together to form an amazing taste that is greater than the individual parts.

Like I said, I want more.  MORE of this, please!!!

2002 Raw Pu-erh Tea Brick (Ke Yi Xing) from ES Green

Taster’s Review:

The picture appears so much greener than the leaves look to me, I had to double check to make sure that this is indeed the tea I’m tasting.

But, the flavors match the way ES Green describes the tea:

It tastes earthy, old, strong. But it is living, vivid, fresh. You will find it smooth and mellow on the first sip.

This is what I taste from this tea.  I taste the earthiness (I did do two pre-rinses though, to ensure that it would not be too earthy), and I even taste the strength and the age.  I also taste a wild note to this … like a vibrant, green tea that is hiding in the distance.  It hides behind the earthy overtures and the caramel-y undertones, but every once in a while, the vibrant, green … almost lushly fresh tasting green tones emerge just to remind me that they’re there.

A remarkably smooth and mellow tea, and very deep in flavor.  With each subsequent infusion, the flavor became deeper and sweeter!  Much of the earthiness softened by the fourth infusion.  It was still somewhat earthy, but not as earthy as the first few cups.  I found that the tea started to taste lighter and more vibrant and fresh with each subsequent infusion, which seemed to give me a gentle nudge to steep it yet again to see how the flavors would be with the next cup.

This is not one of those teas that you want to rush … you want to sit back, and spend an hour or two just exploring the many layers of flavor that it holds in store.
