Red Dragon Pearl from thePuriTea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  thePuriTea

Company Description:

This unusual black tea is hand-rolled into spheres the size of chickpeas in southern Yunnan, China. Just two or three of them are enough for a fantastically bold brew with all the flavors of a crisp autumn day. It’s malty, nuanced and tannic like a fine Second Flush Assam black tea, but it also offers complex flavors of spiced, stewed apples, fallen leaves and cocoa that set it apart from other black teas. Floral aromas and a clean, bittersweet finish round out this singular infusion. Try it with breakfast, brunch, grilled duck or dark chocolate.

Taster’s Review:

I am very fond of jasmine pearls.  Not just because of their sublime flavor, but, because of their shape.  I’m enchanted by the tightly wound spheres of tea… and not just because they’re “cool” or “different” but… there’s a practical side too.  They’re incredibly easy to measure!

So when I find other “pearls” of tea, I’m intrigued.  Like I was with these Red Dragon Pearls from thePuriTea.  These are not jasmine scented… and they are not green tea.  Rather, they are black tea leaves (Yunnan) that have been wound into spheres that are a bit larger than a typical jasmine pearl.  They are still quite easy to measure, though, I just drop two of them into my gaiwan… or four into my smart tea maker.

These pearls brew a deep brown liquor that is quite delightful to the palate.  The flavor is complex.  There is a bittersweet taste to it that is almost like unsweetened cocoa… but not quite.

I can also taste the apple notes that the company description eludes to, it is a deep, fruity note that is somewhat reminiscent of the late fall when I’m making apple butter – but where I might experience cinnamon and nutmeg in my apple butter, here I can taste a hint of smokiness and even a note of pepper.

I’ve said on occasion that a bitter note helps cut through the sweetness of a tea… here it is almost the opposite, the sweetness that I taste seems to cut through what would be a tea that is almost too bitter and makes it quite palatable.  I’m really enjoying it.

There is also a chewiness to this tea that is quite remarkable.  It has a baked characteristic that reminds me a bit of the chewy taste I’d experience when I eat freshly baked French bread… but whereas the bread might be a little yeasty, this tea would be malty.

This tea also possesses a somewhat tannic quality with a cleansing astringency in the finish… also noteworthy in the finish is a sweet, almost floral note that seems to float over the palate.

The complexity of this tea is quite pleasant.  It is quite nice served either hot or chilled.  I prefer this tea with just a drizzle of agave nectar to bring out some of the sweetness to the cup, but it was also quite nice without it.

An enchanting, delightful tea!

Product Description:

Royal Lily Bloom is a hand-tied white tea that blooms into a gorgeous gradation from muted-green white tea buds to delicate, canary-yellow chrysanthemum petals to a vibrant spray of blossoming crimson lily. This regal, sophisticated tea is a classic “flowering tea” or “blossoming tea” in terms of its appearance, but its flavor is no shrinking violet… Surprisingly full flavors of cocoa, malt, flowers, fruit and chestnuts set this tea bloom apart from other flowering teas.

Short infusions of Royal Lily Bloom are perfect with mild breakfast foods, mild Buddhist Chinese foods or mellow desserts. It can also steep longer over meals or at parties for a White-Peony-like aroma and deeper flavors of caramel, malt, apricots and chestnuts

Tasters Review:

I LOVE Flowering teas…the beauty, the art, the tradition…

I’m not the most patient person but flowering or blooming teas are certainly worth the wait!  This one…Royal Lily Bloom Tea from thepuriTea is no exception!  This is a real winner!

I did 3 infusions on this bloom!  Here are my findings…

1st infusion…
It was YUMMY!  It was Sweet but still floral. Weird thing tho…the bloom…bloomed…but upsidedown! I tried to flip it gently several times and it just wouldn’t belly-up! Regardless is was a delight to my palate!

2nd infusion…was still good!  It was Floral-sweet and even juicy. The aftertaste reminded me of Chestnuts…a sweet Chestnut more than a bitter-nutty Chestnut.

3rd infusion was semi-fruity and semi-floral and sweet. A bit sugar-like…and still VERY good!

Take TIME for this BLOOM…it’s WORTH it!

Hong Jing Luo from thepuriTea

Leaf Type: Black Tea

Where To Buy: thepuriTea

Product Description:

If you’re a fan of Golden Yunnan then you’ll be a fan of her little cousin Hong Jing Luo. The name loosely translates into the golden soft downy feathers, its young loosely rolled black tea with golden tips is reminiscent of the finest Chinese black teas. Great morning tea to get you started with your day, goes well with milk or try it with brown sugar.

Tasters Review:

When I first read the product description on this one – it ‘had me at’ “If You’re A Fan Of Golden Yunnan…”

It just so happens that I am so I was excited to try this tea!  I did two infusions while trying Hong Jing Luo by thepuriTea and here are my findings…

For the 1st infusion it tasted a little like cocoa and a rich-semi sugary. It reminded me of a Raisin-taste…almost like the raisins in a sugar cookie and CRISP.  It has a very nice scent!

For the 2nd Infusion…

I smell…sweet potatoes, YES, Sweet Potatoes! It’s an interesting taste, indeed! Maybe more like sweet potatoes with brown sugar.   And it’s still crisp and sweet!  After the 2nd infusion cools for a few minutes (at room temperature) I can taste a slight woodsy yet sweet taste at the end of the sip and into the after taste.

This is a very unique cup of tea!  That gets points in my book!  And it tastes good too!  VERY Memorable!

Milk Oolong from thepuriTea

Tea Type: Oolong

Where To Buy: thepuriTea

Production Description:
A one of a kind tea, let alone Oolong. That’s how we sum up our Milk Oolong. The aroma is mind boggling, the taste unexpectedly amazing and you’ll be asking yourself “How is this tea?”. This very special Chinese Oolong is produced from tea leaves picked at a certain temperature, altitude, soil conditions and time which creates it’s uniquely milky and silky texture. The light yellow liquid creates a sweet smooth milk aroma and will leave a taste in your mouth that makes you yearning for more.

Tasters Review:

I have only had a few other milk oolongs so far and I have liked them but for different reasons because it seems all that I have tried have all been very, VERY different from each other.

This Milk Oolong from thepuriTea tastes like almond milk or coconut milk, almost. It’s Sweet but nutty and creamy.  The leaves really expand during the infusion so not much loose leaf is needed to infuse!  I was pleased with this Milk Oolong.  It is quite memorable.

It was screaming for a 2nd infusion so I tried it.  The 2nd infusion smelled more buttery and less sweet but also more Earthy but not as smooth. I think I prefer the creaminess of the first infusion but I certainly give a thumbs up for the differences between the two infusions and the unique texture and taste of this milk oolong!
