About Tea of Life Ayurvedic Collection:

The word “Ayurveda” is derived from two words – “Ayus” meaning life and “Veda” meaning ‘knowledge’ or ‘science’.  So the literal meaning of the word Ayurveda is ‘The Science of Life.’

Life or Ayus, according to Ayurveda, is a combination of senses, mind, body and soul.  So Ayurveda does not just limit itself to the body or physical symptoms, but also provides comprehensive knowledge about spiritual, mental and emotional health.

The traditional healing system of Ayurveda is based on a theory of balance between the body (physical), the soul (spiritual) and the mind (psychological).

Ingredients:

Green Tea with Lemongrass, Gotukola, Ginger, Lavender Buds, Cumin Seed, Fennel.

Taster’s Review:

I don’t know that I was necessarily looking to “De-Stress” today, but I definitely wanted something that would help me unwind and relax without making me want to go and take a nap (like Chamomile would do!) so I decided I’d try this Ayurvedic De-Stress Tea from Tea of Life to help me calm down a little.

When I opened the individually wrapped package that held this tea bag, I could smell the cumin seed!  I love cumin and because it’s not really a spice that you often find in tea blends, I’m happy when I do come across a tea blend that has cumin in it.

And I can really taste the cumin in the brewed tea.  It is the strongest flavor that I notice in the cup, but, it doesn’t overwhelm the palate.  I am also tasting the gotakola here, and together these two spices give the overall cup a very ‘curry-ish’ sort of flavor.  I also taste notes of green tea and citrus, the peppery notes of ginger and a hint of licorice from the fennel.  I don’t taste a lot of Lavender.

This is a very savory tea with the spices that have been used to craft this blend.  The green tea adds a slight vegetal note and a buttery tone and texture, as well as a hint of sweetness that contrasts nicely with the overall savory flavor of this tea.

I enjoyed it, and I will say that I think it served its purpose as I feel not quite as wound up as I was before I started sipping on this tea.  It’s not something I’d drink daily, but it is something I’d turn to – happily! – on a stressful day when I need something to get my mind back on track.

Taster’s Review:

I know I’ve mentioned Chuck’s Produce several times on this blog.  I love this store!  It not only offers great produce, but other high quality foods as well, including some great teas from local vendors like The Jasmine Pearl Tea Merchants.

In the bulk section of Chuck’s, I can get these teas bulk, which means I can get as little or as much as I want.  I like that flexibility, because as I’ve said before, I’m a tea taster.  I like to try a little bit of every tea rather than having a large quantity of a favorite.  And the bulk section lets me get just enough for a pot full of tea, but not so much that I’ll have more than I need.

So, when I noticed this Licorice Green Tea from The Jasmine Pearl Tea Merchants, I was excited!  I love licorice!

This has a powerful licorice flavor from not only licorice root, but also fennel and anise.  It tastes licorice-y, reminiscent of a strong black licorice candy.  The clove comes in and cuts through the licorice a little bit to keep it from tasting like those licorice cough drops.  The clove is just the right touch for this blend.

With my first couple of sips, I found myself wondering where the green tea was in this blend, because I really couldn’t taste it.  All I was tasting was licorice and clove.  But after a few sips, the smooth flavor of the Gunpowder green tea came though.  The green tea notes are a little overwhelmed here.  I taste the nutty flavor of the green tea, and a soft buttery note which is something that I don’t usually note in a gunpowder green.  I find it interesting how different ingredients in a blend like this can bring out different qualities in a tea that I haven’t really experienced (or rarely experienced.)

Even though I feel like some of the green tea flavor is lost here, I really do like the licorice-i-ness of this tea.  This tea is a licorice lover’s delight, but this isn’t that wimpy fruit flavored licorice stuff that they sell at the concession stand in a movie theater.  This is REAL licorice flavor, so if that’s not your thing, this is not the tea for you.

Taster’s Review:

Oh wow!  This Red Maple Spice Tisane from Shanti Tea is seriously YUM!  I didn’t think it would be this good – I tend to be apprehensive when it comes to rooibos blends – but I’m happy to report that this is a very tasty rooibos blend!

That might have a little something to do with the fact that the spice and maple notes dominate and I don’t really taste a strong presence from the rooibos.  But I’m just fine with that.  I do taste very subtle hints of a nutty taste from the rooibos and the flavor unites seamlessly with the maple and spice.

The cardamom and fennel offer a flavor that is warm and comforting.  I taste hints of licorice from the fennel and hints of citrus from the cardamom, a flavor profile that is further accentuated with the addition of orange peels to the mix.  The citrus-y notes are delicate and most noticeable toward the end of the sip.

The maple is sweet and tastes amazing with these other flavors.  Everything is very harmonious.  It is a sweet yet spicy treat that I find very cozy to sip on when it’s cold outside.  I think I prefer this as a hot drink, although it tastes good when it cools too.

A really thoughtfully crafted rooibos tisane.  This is one I’d highly recommend.

Taster’s Review:

Are you looking for a truly DIFFERENT chai blend?  This African Chai Blend from Justea might be just what you’re looking for!  This chai is quite different from many of the other chai blends that I’ve tasted … and different is good!

That’s not to say that I’ve not enjoyed the other chai blends I’ve tasted … you know how I love a good spiced blend.  But this blend focuses on other spices:  I taste the fennel and licorice root up front, and they give the cup a sweet, snappy kind of taste, and like the Tea Sommelier video for this tea states, it’s a very silky sort of wash over the palate.  The clove and coriander lend warmth and zest to the cup without turning this into something overly spiced.  The balance of the spices allows for enjoyment of each ingredient’s presence here, and I like that.

The Kenyan black tea is an excellent base for this tea because it is so rich and smooth, and it has its own sort of natural spice taste to it.  It seems like a smart choice to accentuate the natural spice tones of the tea by turning the tea into the base of this African Chai.

I also taste the rose in this.  I like the hint of sweetness from the floral notes here.  It adds just a little interest, just a little something to keep the palate excited to keep tasting.

This tastes less “spicy” and more warm and “spiced.”  It doesn’t have a “spicy-hot” sort of flavor, instead, it tastes comfortably warm, with a cozy sort of taste to it.  The kind of tea that you like to warm up with on a chilly autumn day.  As I continue to sip, my mouth feels warm, as though I’ve had something peppery, but not so hot that I feel the need to wash it down with something cooling.  It’s a very enjoyable warmth.

I tried this African Chai a few different ways.  First, I tried it straight up, and it was delicious.  Then I tried it with a little bit of raw turbinado sugar, and discovered my favorite way to drink this chai.  The sugar brings out the subtle nuances of the spices, and I got the most enjoyment out of this chai with just a little bit (about half a teaspoon for a cup of tea) of sugar (honey would do nicely too!)  Finally, I decided to try it latte, and this makes a really outstanding latte too.  Just a splash of warmed milk enhances the silky smooth quality of this tea.  I really enjoyed it as a latte, but, the milk does mute some of the spices just a tad, and since I really love the spices … I’d have to say that the best way – or at least, my favorite way – to enjoy this is with just a little bit of sugar or honey.  It’s so good!

Taster’s Review:

I am not at all familiar with the flavor of Absinthe.  I once bought a tiny “sampler” bottle of it while shopping in a liquor store with my husband, but, I didn’t get to try it, because my brother in law decided he wanted it.  And so he pours it and mixes up some concoction with sugar but, he didn’t like the drink he made with it so it didn’t get consumed. I did notice a strong licorice-y scent from the liquor though.  And the aroma that I’m smelling from this Absinthe Aethers Green Tea Blend from Solstice Brews is very similar to what I remember from the alcoholic beverage that my brother in law prepared but didn’t drink.

But I’ll be honest … the main reason why I bought the tiny bottle of Absinthe is because Vincent Van Gogh was on the label.  Yeah … I was suckered in by packaging.  What can I say?  I’m a Van Gogh groupie.

Anyway … I’m really enjoying not just the licorice-y scent of this Absinthe Aethers tea but, also the flavor of it!  It has a fantastically snappy, warmly spiced licorice note to it, and the hint of citrus from the lemongrass offers a really compelling contrast.  These interesting flavors do not detract from the smooth, sweet, slightly smoky and earthy notes of the gunpowder green tea, but seem to enhance the overall cup.  I really like how the flavors all come together.

The fennel and anise give it that licorice-y taste that I’ve been raving about, but also a nice warmth and hint of spice to it.  Not really “spicy” … but a sense of warmth that is not unlike the warmth you might experience when you sip a glass of liquor. Not an unpleasant warmth … something gentle and soothing.  And that seems to be the overall experience that I’m getting from this tea – a very gentle, soothing comfort.

A really well-conceived blend from Solstice Brews!
