Treat Yourself to #SmoothSensualitea from #CupOfLove

Having a hard day?  The hours at work getting too long?  Did you get doused by a car passing through the rain puddle?  Just need something to make you relax?  It’s hard to go wrong with a tea named Smooth Sensualitea from Cup of Love.  That’s a tea blend that you know will treat you right.

So kick off your shoes, hang up your coat, and breathe a sigh of relief: it’s tea-time.  This rooibos blend is naturally caffeine-free, good for when you need to keep your cool or if you want to brew a cup at bedtime.  This blend is all creamy vanilla bean coupled with sweet herbal marshmallow.  The mallow flowers do bring a certain tone of sweetness to this tea, not to mention they look good with the cornflower blue-purple petals, a lovely contrast to the orange-brown dry leaf of the rooibos.

There’s a hint of orange in this blend, but it is mild, just a kiss of sunny citrus to go with all the easy-going creaminess.  Overall it’s a winning vanilla blend, smooth, and creamy, and comforting.

Treat yourself to a Cup of Love tea.

Smoky Coconut Packs a Punch!

Smoking Coconut from 52Teas packs a punch!  It has a base of bold Assam black tea, the powerful addition of coconut chips, and the dangerous, dreamy taste of smoke.  I’ve come to seek out smoky teas of the years, so I found this to be an exciting, enjoyable cup.  The coconut is fragrant and buttery throughout the dry leaf and brewing process, while the smoke lingers at the back end of each sip.  With the fatty coconut and hint of smoke, this tea feels more savory than refreshing.  It would pair well with a bold meal like bacon and eggs or a barbeque lunch.

This tea review goes out to a favorite create-a-character from my 2012 wrestling video game: Smoky Coconut.  Smoky was an old school wrestler, big dude, rocking a classic mullet, and throwing down power moves in his blazing white singlet. Pound-for-pound, Smoky had the best mustache in the business. Though he lost the infamous rumble match to SpicyGirlGimlet, Smoky Coconut will always have a place in the hearts of his fans.

Here’s the scoop!

Leaf Type: black
Where to Buy: 52Teas
Description: I just wanted a tea that was coconut-y and a little bit smoky. So that’s what I did. Sometimes, that’s what my inspiration is all about. I wanted a coconut-y tea and I thought that the combination of a lightly smoky tea with the creamy, sweet coconut flavor would be really interesting.
I started with a blend of black teas – a rich, malty Assam; a smooth, medium-bodied Ceylon and a tippy, robust Yunnan. Then I added just a teensy bit of Lapsang Souchong to give it a hint of smoke. I wasn’t going for a heavily smoked tea this time around – I didn’t want an overpoweringly smoky presence – just enough smoke to add some contrast to the silky sweet coconut flavor. Then I added a bunch of huge shreds of coconut.
The result is a sublimely yummy cuppa that you’ve gotta try. Sure, it might be a little on the ‘usual’ side especially when compared to some of the teas that we’ve made in the past but it’s no less delicious. Sometimes – going with something a little more ordinary can lead to extraordinary results!

Holiday Blend Alert! Snowball from Bluebird Tea Co.

I love Hostess Sno-Ball cakes.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, the Sno-Ball was a chocolate cake, filled with cream, covered in marshmallow, and crusted in coconut.  Yeah, I know, it’s a lot to take in.  Not to mention the cakes were dyed different colors for the holidays (orange for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, pink for whatever).  As a kid, these cakes were the nectar of the gods. Into adulthood, we entered the dark ages when Hostess filed for bankruptcy and the snacks were no longer being manufactured. To help me cope with the loss, I took a stab at designing my own chocolate-coconut tea blend (it turned out pretty good).  Since then, the Hostess recipes have been acquired by new companies and I can now find those tasty marshmallow cakes back on the shelves.
With all this in mind, it was an easy choice to order up a bag of Snowball tea from Bluebird Tea Co.  I love this blend, it is no surprise to me that it has even won awards for its taste.  Rich coconut and sweet chocolate are really pushed over the top with mini marshmallows.  There’s a hot-chocolate coziness to this tea, made all the more decadent by the creamy coconut and cocoa shells.  I take my tea black, without sugar or milk, but this is just the kind of tea that would make a fantastic dessert late with milk and whipped cream.  I look forward to ordering more of Snowball tea from Bluebird Tea Co. to drink and to share before the season is over.

Blueberries and Blossoms in My Cup! Rooibos Blend From The Kettlery

As much as I love pumped-up black teas and spicy chai teas, I do need an herbal comfort now and again.  Enter: Blueberry Blossoms Rooibos Tea from the Kettlery.  Unsurprisingly, the overall the focus of this blend is blueberry.  You can smell the berries in the dry leaf, and their flavor is very forward in the brew.  This tea is not too juicy, or fruit-heavy, like other blueberry blends with hibiscus or apple pieces.  This is more subdued and toasty, like a blueberry scone.

I can understand why rooibos teas might be a hit-or-miss for some people.  Red rooibos can taste like medicine if oversteeped and green rooibos can be bland if you are not in the mood for it.  This tea feels like a happy medium, an easy-going rooibos, strong enough to add some nuttiness underneath the blueberry flavors, but far from overpowering. I didn’t experience any sour or bitter tones when brewing this tea, only warm and gentle blueberry.

There are marshmallow blossoms listed in the ingredients list, which I found intriguing.  We all know what marshmallows taste like, little clouds of pure sweetness in cocoa or Lucky Charms, but they’re not quite the same as marshmallow blossoms.  My internet research tells me that mallow blossoms should taste a bit sweet, like their sugary counterparts.  Any additional sweetness in this tea gets wrapped up in the blueberry flavor, and I didn’t notice any unusual herbal tastes in this tea.  Perhaps the mallow blossoms are in this blend for their visual appeal.  The little lavender blossoms certainly are a nice pair with the deep purple blueberries.

If you’re looking for a gentle, nutty, blueberry tea without too much sour fruit or in-your-face hibiscus, I recommend brewing up a pot of Blueberry Blossoms Roobios from the Kettlery.

The Holiday Season Approaches!

ChristmasLogo1This isn’t a review but an advertisement (sorry guys!)  No, we don’t usually advertise here on this site – this is an anomaly – but because one of the founding SororiTea Sisters is now the Mad Tea Artist behind 52Teas, she gets the privilege of deviating from the norm.

And 52Teas has a Holiday Pre-Sale going on right now on Kickstarter!  This isn’t a typical “fundraising” Kickstarter campaign, instead, this is a chance for you to get some Christmas shopping done early while it helps us keep things just a little more organized by keeping our pre-sales separate from our day-to-day sales activity.

52Teas is offering 5 unique, limited edition teas for this promotion – these teas will be available only during the season and once they’re sold out, they won’t be reblended until next Christmas!

Here’s the specs on those five VITs (Very Important Teas):

  • Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire – This is a special blend of black teas with a hint of Lapsang Souchong to give it that smoky touch that you’d experience from an open fire.  Flavored with chestnut and caramel and just a hint of spice to give it that winter-y kind of appeal.
  • Gingerbread Houjicha – I love the flavor of gingerbread and I think that the roasty-toasty, nutty flavor of houjicha would offer a delightful base to these flavors.
  • Eggnog Chai – A Chai blend (black tea with a touch of honeybush) flavored with notes of custard-y eggnog with an extra dash of nutmeg to enliven the cup.  This would make a great latte to serve Santa on Christmas Eve!
  • Cranberry Orange Cider – A blend of red and green rooibos that’s been flavored with cranberry, orange and apple with a medley of holiday spices.
  • Peppermint Marshmallow Melting in Hot Chocolate – For this blend, I chose a special black tea blend (crafted with teas from our friends at Verdant Tea) for the base that has a rich, natural cacao flavor with hints of malt.  Peppermint, marshmallow and even more chocolate-y flavor to create a deliciously delightful cuppa.

YUM!  So please take a moment to visit the 52Teas Kickstarter Holiday Pre-Sale and get some of that early Christmas shopping done early!  The campaign closes on October 27th so your card won’t be charged until that date, and the teas will be shipped in plenty of time for gift giving!

Thanks for taking a moment to read this . . . now let’s get back to the reviews!
