Morning Mojo from The Tea Spot. . . . .

Have you ever taken one sip of a tea and been like “yuuuup, I’m going to have to buy a vat of this and keep it in an armed fortress just for myself”?

That’s how I felt about this tea, a super-creamy vanilla/orange pu’erh/black confection. It’s perfectly balanced, like a ninja poised to strike another ninja. (Because that obviously requires extra stealth). There’s the sweetness of the vanilla against the tangy of the orange and the earthy of the pu’erh and the depth of the black.

The flavors are like constructive criticism, which starts and ends with a compliment, and offers helpful advice in the middle. It’s like hearing “hey, sweetie, honeydew, WAKE THE HELL UP, lovely. Today’s going to be fine.”

And you know what? Today is, as promised, just fine so far.

Here’s the scoop!

Twisted Leaf Assam from The Tao of Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  The Tao of Tea

Product Description:

Made as per The Tao of Tea specifications. This Twisted Leaf Assam is probably a first for this tea growing region. We provided the insight to develop an Assam tea with actual full size tea leaves that are sideways rolled and baked (The Northern Taiwanese Baozhong teas are also made in this rolling manner and known for their clear flavors). As the tea steeps, you can see the entire tea leaf unroll and open up. For those who are wary of brisk teas, this tea doesn’t have a hint of bitterness or briskness.

Taster’s Review:

This is a FANTASTIC Assam.

It is incredibly rich and flavorful, but, without any tone of bitterness that is often associated with an Assam.  Sure, I was careful how I brewed it, but, even with careful brewing, I can often taste a subtle hint in an Assam that isn’t quite bitter, but it sort of says “if you over steep me, I will be bitter.”  This Twisted Leaf Assam does not have even that subtle hint of bitterness in the background.

It has a delicious malty tone that is coupled with a caramel-y sweetness that makes for a very irresistible taste.  In the background (but not too distant background) there are notes of cocoa … not a milk chocolate-y kind of cocoa, but more of a deep, rich cocoa powder.

This is the kind of Assam that I wouldn’t mind enjoying every morning. It has that hefty kind of taste and texture I expect from an Assam – that sort of deep, freshly baked bread-y kind of taste.  But what is so amazing about this cup, also, is that the flavors are so clean and delivered clearly.  With some Assam teas you need to really focus to understand the complexity of the tea, but not with this one.  It is a very upfront, straight-forward kind of tea that isn’t afraid to show me what its made of.

If you’re a fan of Assam tea, you should give this one a try.  I’d also recommend this to anyone who has tried Assam in the past and found them to be too harsh or brassy, this one will surprise you!

The black teas are very bold and are what you seek for a morning tea!  The honeybush gives it the natural sweetness and pairs wonderfully with the hint of vanilla.  The pairing of honeybush and vanilla also gives this blend a great smoothness to the tea as well.

English Breakfast from Enjoying Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  Enjoying Tea

Company Description:

This is a classic blend of Sri Lanka Ceylon flowery pekoe (FP) black tea. Although usually served in the morning, it is the perfect refreshing and invigorating tea for any time of the day. When brewed the English Breakfast produces a bright, full bodied, and amber tea. It is especially enticing with milk and sugar.

Taster’s Review:

Ceylon Tea.  This is generally the tea that most people think of when they think of tea.  For most of us, this is the tea that we grew up with.  For some people, Ceylon tea is a simple, straightforward black tea, even verging on the boring side.

But the Ceylon black tea blend in this English Breakfast tea is anything but boring!  It has a smooth yet rich taste.  It is perhaps not as strong as some breakfast blends I’ve encountered, and yet, I find myself quite enamored with this cuppa.

The fruity notes of this tea are captivating and encourage me to keep sipping.  I can also detect a faint floral note in the background which is quite pleasant.  There is a very nice complexity to this tea with multiple layers of flavor.  This tea is certainly not boring!

I tried my first cup of this tea without any addition – no sugar, no cream.  It is very good like that – a bit on the mellow side, but, quite enjoyable.  Then I tried it with a little honey.  I found the honey highlights the fruit and flower of this tea very nicely.  Delightful!

But where this tea really excels is with the addition of milk and honey!  Now it becomes a creamy, almost decadent treat that is welcome at my breakfast table any time.

It is also quite good iced!  Try mixing this tea with Enjoying Tea’s Strawberry Black Tea (which I’ll be reviewing in a few days time!) and brewing it up for a very refreshing, delicious iced tea that both kids and adults will enjoy.
