Taster’s Review:

I know that 52Teas was planning on working on a new black tea base to use with their black tea blends – I wonder if this is the blend?  It’s a little difficult to judge a black tea blend when it’s in a chai because the spices tend to be the star of the show, so it will be difficult to give you a clear idea of what I think of this “new blend,” but I’ll do my best!

This is actually a really tasty cup.  The black tea base is strong, smooth and robust.  There is some astringency to it, but I’m not finding it to be overly astringent.  It’s got a rich, full flavor.

But as I said in the first paragraph, the spices tend to be the star of the show when it comes to a chai and that’s certainly true here.  I like the way the spices come through here – it’s spicy and warm.  There’s a good balance of spice flavors:  I taste all the components.  I guess if I could change anything about the spices that have been used in this blend, I’d want just a tad more pepper.  Maybe instead of using “whole peppercorns” – crack them so that more of the peppery aspect comes through.  But, I like that there isn’t too much cinnamon or ginger.  I like that I can taste the cardamom and cloves.  Overall, I’m enjoying the way the spices present themselves in this blend.

And I like that I’m tasting pumpkin too!  The pumpkin tastes sweet and has a certain savory element to it too, and I like the way the pumpkin and spices taste together.

This is good served straight but even better when served with a dollop of honey to bring out the flavor of the spices.  If you want to go for a serious yum factor:  go latte – the creaminess of the dairy adds something to the pumpkin to make it more pumpkin pie-ish.

Product Review: Pumpkin Spice Chai Tea Latte Mix from Trader Joe’s

pumpkin-spice-chaiProduct Information:

Based on the traditional Indian drink masala chai (mixed-spice tea), Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice Chai starts with a chai tea blend that’s a combination of honey, vanilla, and black tea, heightened by a mélange of spices like cinnamon, anise, clove, cardamom, and ginger. In honor of Pumpkin Season, in addition to the traditional chai spices, Pumpkin Spice Chai is accentuated by pumpkin pie spices and real pumpkin. Like pumpkin pie, you can enjoy Pumpkin Spice Chai hot or cold.  Unlike pumpkin pie, Pumpkin Spice Chai is drinkable, and ready in moments—you just add (hot) water and enjoy!

Taster’s Review:

You’ll be seeing a few different reviews for a few different pumpkin flavored chai blends on this blog over the next week or so … what can I say?  It’s that time of year!

I just returned home from Trader Joe’s and I think that they had a pumpkin explosion in their kitchens (or wherever it is that they make all their food) because there is pumpkin EVERYTHING in the place.  They had pumpkin waffles, pumpkin scones, pumpkin butter, pumpkin macarons, pumpkin bars and pumpkin soup just to name a few things.  They even had pumpkin ravioli.  Yep, I bought some of that too.

They also had a few pumpkin tea selections including a pumpkin rooibos blend and this product:  Pumpkin Spice Chai Tea Latte Mix.  And it is mmmmm!

I don’t usually go all crazy for chai tea latte mixes like this because they tend to be more sugar than they are tea and I like to decide how much milk and sugar I’ll be putting in a tea (if I decide to put any in it at all).  But, something about this tin of Pumpkin Spice Chai called to me and before I could say no and walk away, the tin was in my basket.

And I am really happy to say that while this is a sweet drink, the sweetness in this works.  It doesn’t taste too sweet (then again, I do admittedly have a sweet tooth).  This is on the sweeter side – I rarely sweeten my teas although I do usually sweeten my chai just a little bit because I think that a little bit of sweetener enhances the spices.  But even though it is on the sweeter side, the spices offset some of the sweet notes and there is a nice balance between spices and sweet.

Best of all, though, is that I can taste PUMPKIN in this.  It seems that all too often when I see a tea with the words “Pumpkin Spice” it turns out to be just the spices (as in pumpkin pie spice) and no pumpkin flavor.  This has pumpkin!

Hooray for Trader Joe’s pumpkin harvest!

The spices are robust but not what I’d call “spicy.”  It’s a well-rounded taste of warm spices.  I can taste the ginger but not so much that it’s “biting” me.  I can taste the cinnamon, clove and cardamom.  They’re warm and comforting.  I taste just a hint of licorice-y sweetness from the anise.  If there is a scale on “spiciness” of a chai, this would rate maybe one measurement below medium.  It’s spicier than “mild” but it’s not quite medium.

Kind of like a pumpkin pie.

The black tea is almost hidden here, though, and that’s my one big complaint about this.  I think that the next time I make some of this, I might brew up some black tea (perhaps an Assam) and mix that with this so that it amplifies the black tea.

It’s tasty as it is, of course, but, I would like more tea flavor.  Hey, I’m a tea freak, remember?

And one thing that really stands out to me with this product is that the “latte” part isn’t overwhelming the rest of the flavors.  This doesn’t taste like too heavy a latte.  I find that to be true with a lot of the chai concentrates that you can find on the grocery store shelves.  Those tend to be all sugar and milk and very little actual chai.  I appreciate that this has some flavor and the sweetener and milk are accentuating those flavors rather than hiding them.

Taster’s Review:

I don’t remember ever tasting a pumpkin brownie before, and I’m pretty sure that if I had tasted a pumpkin brownie before, I would remember it!  So, for the purposes of this review, I’m going to just have to imagine what a pumpkin brownie would taste like.

And while I’ve never tried pumpkin brownies, something I have tried (and I LOVE!) are pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.  When autumn arrives, something I’m always keeping a look out for at my grocery store bakery are those cookies … and I’m happy to say that this reminds me a lot of those yummy treats!

But getting back to the subject of pumpkin brownies, I think I’m going to have to find a recipe for pumpkin brownies too.  This might just have to be the Thanksgiving dessert for this year’s Thanksgiving.  Because … yeah.  Pumpkin … Brownie.  Do I need to say any more?

And if my pumpkin brownies wind up tasting anything like this yummy tisane, I think it might even be something that is requested more often than on Thanksgiving.  This is YUM!

The honeybush base is a nice choice for these flavors, because it has a naturally sweet, nutty taste that goes really well with a fudge brownie flavor.  It adds some depth to the brownie notes.  And I like the way the honeyed flavor works with the pumpkin too.

This is a sweet dessert-like tea, but I like that even though it’s inspired by something that is really rich and sweet, it isn’t an overly sweet cup of tea.  It satisfies the sweet tooth without overwhelming it.  There is a balance, ad the pumpkin, while it is a sweeter vegetable, it adds an element of savory to the cup so that it’s not cloying.

The pumpkin is sweet but not too sweet, and adds a compelling contrast to the cacao flavor, and I really love the way pumpkin and chocolate taste together.  There’s a good amount of chocolate flavor, a good amount of pumpkin, and I can still taste the nutty flavors of the honeybush too.

YUM!

Pumpkin Pie Crepe with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce Flavored Iced Tea from Southern Boy Teas

Taster’s Review:

So, I’m thinking that this tea, this Pumpkin Pie Crepe with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce Flavored Iced Tea from Southern Boy Teas has the longest name ever for a tea, right?  If you know of a longer name … let me know!

I hot brewed this tea because I wanted to be sure to get all the flavor out of it that I could.  I find that when I cold brew, the flavor is a little more subtle.  Usually its still good, but for the strongest flavor, hot brew is the way to go.  At least that’s what I’ve found with the Southern Boy Teas line of iced teas.

I don’t know if what I’m tasting is a pumpkin pie crepe that has been topped with vanilla bean ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce.  Then again, I haven’t ever had a pumpkin pie crepe that has been topped with vanilla bean ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce.  I would definitely order said crepe if I ever saw it on a menu though.

What I am tasting, though, is an interesting medley of flavors that is a little bit of pumpkin, a little bit of vanilla, subtle notes of spice, hints of chocolate and notes of black tea in the background.  It’s TASTY.  I like all these flavors that I’m tasting in this glass of iced refreshment.  It’s certainly an interesting combination of flavors, that’s for sure.

By the way, 52Teas/Southern Boy Teas has another Kickstarter campaign going on, this time to bring iced green tea (as well as white and honeybush iced teas) to the SBT line, as well as enable the company to become organically certified (they’ve been using organic products, but, its costly to become certified organic!) plus help to get Southern Boy Teas out to more customers.  Check it out, and please consider contributing to helping this small business.

Auntie’s Pumpkin Pie Black Tea Blend from Doehi

Tea Description:

China black tea with cinnamon bits, pumpkin sprinkles and flavoring. A classic flavor for any time of the year.

Taster’s Review:

Oh my goodness!  I love the aroma of the dry leaf of Auntie’s Pumpkin Pie Black Tea Blend from Doehi!  From the moment I cut off the airtight seal on the zipper pouch of the package, I could smell the warm cinnamon notes.  Then when I opened the zipper locked seal, my olfactory nerves delighted in the smell of sweet pumpkin and cinnamon.  Mmm!

And the tea is visually delightful too.  Little pieces of cinnamon and tiny pumpkin shaped candy sprinkles decorate the black tea leaves.  While I have made note previously that I’m not particularly fond of the practice of these novelty candy sprinkles added to tea, I can’t help but smile when I see the little pumpkins.  They’re cute, darn it!  But I am happy to also see that they weren’t added with a heavy hand.  There’s a light sprinkling of these sprinkles, just enough to add some charm, whimsy and color to the blend.

The cinnamon is warm but it doesn’t overpower this blend.  When you eat a slice of pumpkin pie, you don’t expect to be bombarded with cinnamon flavor, do you?  This tea doesn’t bombard your taste buds with cinnamon, there is just enough cinnamon to give the squash the right amount of spice.

The pumpkin notes are sweet and tasty.  There have been a few “pumpkin pie” type teas that I’ve tasted that have tasted more of spice than of pumpkin, and even some that have had no discernible pumpkin flavor at all.  This isn’t one of those teas!  I can taste the pumpkin!   It’s sweet and slightly savory and has a smooth, rich flavor that compliments the black tea notes.

And speaking of the black tea … it isn’t overpowered in this blend!  It is a milder tasting tea – I suspect a Ceylon – but it isn’t so mellow that it’s hiding behind the flavors of pumpkin and cinnamon.  It’s a even-toned taste with a medium-body.  Flavorful and I’m finding that the black tea flavors are actually accentuated by the presence of the pumpkin.  These two work together very well.

Pumpkin is a decidedly “autumnal” sort of dessert, but, I for one happen to like pumpkin pie any time of year.  And this tea from Doehi allows me to enjoy the delicious flavor of pumpkin in the figure friendly form of tea … all year ’round!  This is tasty served straight up with no additions.  To amplify the “pumpkin-y” notes, add a pinch of sugar (or brown sugar!)  This is also AWESOME served as a latte, I think that the dairy sort of “finishes” the pumpkin pie taste.  Think of the latte as the whipped cream on top of the pie!
